Author Passed Linux+

I’m happy in passing the Linux+ test today. I found it hard. Harder than the A+ and N+ but not quite as hard as the 70-210 (MCP exam). I thought that my score would be a borderline pass or fail so seeing 750 on the screen was a relief. The print out gave me 18 things in what I got wrong compared to 3-4 for my A and N+.

The book I used was Linux+ Certification (Osborne) by Bird and Harwood. It is not that good. It covers the objectives and is ok for a new user but it is lacking in detail and it always talks too much around the subject instead of giving you what you should know for the exam. Too many words not enough straight to the point accuracy. In the questions at the end of the chapters it says that there is no file boot.log (pg 328), hmm..funny about that considering I got two questions on it.

I got a lot of questions on find and grep including the switches that go with them, a lot of rpm questions including errors that can be displayed, Some A+ type questions but harder, also heaps of log file questions as well as the SUID and /etc directory stuff.

I also got that simple question about resetting a modem. I had the exact question in the MCP, A+ and N+. That makes it 4 times now. Is that coincidence or some sort of Comptia conspiracy? or alliteration of the c word..hehe!

I have that Osborne book too. Was that the only book you used? I'm using three books plus some guides. That Osborne book has some glaring mistakes. Did you catch the BIG goof-up in the book about SCSI prorities? It had it totally backwards. And a few other mistakes that I've noticed that are more minor. Anyway, congrats.

Yes it was the only book i used. But i have the Unix in a nutshell book for commands and switches (5 years old though) and Linux Bible (not Linux+) which i didn't use except for getting Red Hat 7.1. I also used the cram sessions study guide which was not good and a very good study guide called "Linux+ Short Course" by Emmett Dulaney and Jon Holman. The latter is very good with over 100 pages including 95 prac questions and 19 prac assignemnts. I found this on the web using google but i have lost the URL. It is worth getting for sure and it's free. I could create a web page so people could download it or i could mail it.

I am on a tight budget so i usually just use one book. When i get some money i might buy some Linux Administration books. But you don't see much admin stuff in the test except the basic stuff.

Awesome link. I will add this to my collection of resources and bookmark it for when people in the future ask for Linux+ study resources on this board.
