| By the way, the course requires that you participate in a mailing list, but they have banned a number of free email accounts due to excessive spamming. If all you have are email accounts from yahoo, hotmail, etc., you may want to try: http://www.linuxmail.org/ -- this is a free Linux email provider, and the list accepts email accounts from this provider. It would also be a good idea to have your own separate mail account for the list anyway, since at times the mailings can get rather heavy (30-60 emails a day on occasion).
There is also an IRC channel that they use for real-time chatting and for helping each other. The server is irc.debian.org and the channel is #BLT -- anyone is free to drop in.
Cheers. | |

| Thanks for that mail site Mr Linux Guy. Been there, set it up and tested it both ways. I'm set to go. I've used BSD and programmed under it but it is stale knowledge. This list should be interesting. Time for another cert that does not involve reviewing MS stuff. | |

| Good luck! I am sure that you will enjoy it. | |

| Hi I already have 2 linux text books...............
1)Teach yourself linux in 24 hrs...sams(red hat 5)
2)Using Linux ....5th ed QUE ..(cladera 2.3,red hat 6,debian 2.1 distros)
are these books suitable for this course?
| azimuth40 2002-10-13, 10:53 pm |
| Reading around on the site, I would think so. I don't have a redhat but I do have a debian, and a SuSe, official store distribution, both are easy to install.
However I picked a Corel distro mainly because I got the official starter kit from Osborne for $6 at a close out book site and it came with wordperfect 8. I put it on a pentium 133 with 128MB and a 1.2GB hard disk yesterday. Seems to run just fine and returns a system from the garage. It has a 3com 905 NIC and a 48x CD but no sound. I am hoping it covers everything. Fall back is a Celery 800 256KB and 10 gig which is currently my OS2 Warp sentimental server.

| Thought I would revisist this thread and ask how long it takes for the list moderator to approve you at BLT. I went through the process of registration almost a week ago, but have been waiting for them to let me know whether I'm good for the Nov.4 start date or "sorry bud, should have registered earlier." Only a couple of days left now. | |

I did it 10/11 and have heard nothing since the second email saying forwarded to list moderator for review.

| Usually you are notified just before the new semester starts, Henry White (the mod) is still busy with his current batch of students, but the new semester is just about here, so you will be hearing from him any day now. Mail him at henry@basiclinux.net or info@basiclinux.net if you have any questions. You should be getting a mail asking you for confirmation any day now. | |

| I don't think I read anywhere on their site when the last date for registration was for new semester. As the start date got closer and closer, I just thought it would be more fun to participate in BLT than just to go solo.
I'll cross my fingers and hope you're right Mr. Linux Guy! I'll zap an email to them come Monday morn if I don't hear anything.

| It's near tye bottom ofthe page just between the "No Outlook on the lailing mist" and the "Meetup" service:
"The next term begins Monday, 4 November 2002. Registration for that class closes Saturday, 2 November 2002".
Henry, Anita and Sam are usually pretty accomodating; if you have any problems signing up or getting a reply, be sure to let them know. They'll do all they can to help.

| Yeah, I have a feeling we'll need it -- at least I will...
But it should be fun, and you can't beat the price of admission! No matter what your involvement with this industry is, you cannot ignore Linux any longer. God knows I tried

| There are a number of German speakers there who can help you. The list is internatuional in scope, with Eurpoeans, Asians, Middle Easterners, Americans, et. al. on the list. In addition, get familiar with SuSE's web site as they are a German compnay and have tons of documentation in German.
