Just curious as I have just made an order for freebsd 4.7 cd's set of four. I want to know if anyone has installed this new version of freebsd and what your thought's are on it's compatibility in terms of network cards, modem and mouse configuration etc. Any pointers on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have 4.7 running on 4 of my servers (1 web, 1 cache, 1 VPN and 1 development). So far it supports all the hardware I've thrown at it with the exception of a couple no-name NICs. These are all socket A/duron systems. One uses a SCSI drives, 2 use IDE, and a 3rd uses compact flash. Really, from an end user's perspective, not that much has changed since at least 4.1 (where I got started). I haven't tried 4.7 on any workstations yet.

I found it to be a pain to install. It doesn't like my optical mouse. I finally got it installed with no GUI that works. I'm still interested in loading it [ workstation ] but I need substantially more reading about it than I have done as of yet before I install it. I just reloaded Linux over it & went on.

Other than the mouse, it found & identified my hardware better than Linux or anything M$ has, was quite impressed

Thanks for the feedback guys, I quite agree as I had problems trying to get my mouse to work on freebsd 4.5 just hoping 4.7 would be slightly better. Any insights on this mouse issue ccieToBe?

I've never had any trouble with mice. Did you set yours up in sysinstall? Are you having trouble getting it to work period, or just in X? None of the boxes I loaded 4.7 on have mice, so I'm not sure if there are any quirks with this version.

Yes on sysinstall & getting it to work RIGHT - period.

On Linux installs, it either works right or just like this also. Real glitchy & jumpy, or just locks up. It is a PS/2 optical mouse.
