I am looking to start learning Unix and was wondering what was the best route for this. I currently have a Compaq computer and would like to dual boot the unix O/S with the Win98ME but I am not sure were I should get the Unix o/s to start with. I am wanting to get Unix due to this is what the company I work for uses for website hosting. Any information or links will be greatly Appreciated

I recommend FreeBSD. You can even download an ISO of it at: http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=15

Find out what variant they're using. There are many. FreeBSD's generally considered the most user friendly Unix.

Also if you learn Linux, you can do UNIX.... the command line is the command line, and they aren't too much different. I have used Solaris quite a bit, but dont like how it runs on Intel equipment... I am interested to see what flavor your company runs as well!

So it's possible to install Sun Solaris to Intel-based PC?
And where to get an Sun Solaris OS? (for free preferrably)

Found that the OS version of Unix used are AIX, Solaris and TRU64

I haven't used TRU64 or AIX, but I know that AIX runs on IBM RS6000 servers. If you have the ability to get your hands on those servers at all, that would be great. Go to www.redbooks.ibm.com and in the search window up top, do a search on AIX, and you will get a wealth of information. There are several IBM certifications regarding AIX, and those stick out somewhat on a resume due to the fact that they are OS specific and not everyone and their mother and brother has one. As far as Solaris goes, you can install version 8 on Intel, but I dont think solaris 9 supports intel. I think that you will do great by installing Linux or Solaris on a machine at home and getting good at the command line. You can download solaris 8 for intel from suns site I believe, if not, I have it and if I can find it I can send it to you if you really need it...

I believe that You can download it from their website for 20$. Which is not too much but I really dont trust downloads through Windows for Unix OS. As far as my little experience goes they have strange filenames (for me) and "go figure" instructions <for me>

If You have it and could send it I would appreciate...

But Im not sure if I REALLY need it -->
<ADVICE Needed> I have taken Web programming (ASP, Javascript etc.), Oracle Developer, Oracle9i DBA, MCSD (with VB&sql7) and A+, Network+ COURSES at school Hopefully I will have taken remaining exams by January,
Currently I have OCA,A+,SQL7-mcp
and

then I have to make a choice between:
1) MCSA course 3 Microsoft exams or
2) 3 Courses out of following
a) Java1
b) java2
c) Unix admin (Sun sol8) 1
d) Unix admin 2

rlrouns - I checked on the Sun site and found the "Download CD images for Solaris 8 OE, x86 Operating Environment - $20 US**" Is there anywere that it can be downloaded for free? That is not bad for the Solaris 8 but just curious if anyone has any ideas. Rlrounds if you did find your cd's of solaris 8 I would be interested in getting a copy of them. Thanks

sup,
>>FOR Margus
it depends really on what you wanna go for!!

If you like programming then i would suggest Java. Althought MS.NET is gonna be giving Java very hard time in near future as MS C# is gaining more reputation.
But then again if you know Java .. you can very easily adopt to C++,C# and languages like VB(Visual Basic) will be peanut.

On the other hand if you are into more of administration..then go for UNIX --> UNIX is the reall stuFF.
Although MS has a lot of exams out there.. but learning UNIX will be extreamly benificial. There are still many corporate businesses using UNIX, LINUX instead of WindowsXX.
I have nothing against MS.. its just that..after doing Java or UNIX you will find it much easier to use, admin, adopt to MS products.
Sooner or later you will have to use MS product. Its just the way MS works ;-)

Thats my view anyway.
Hope it helps,
aiight.
