Author SAGE accepts Linux+!

SAGE Certification now offers the Linux+ certification as an alternative to its current cSAGE UNIX module.

Candidates who have already earned Linux+ may apply this credential toward cSAGE certification in place of the UNIX module currently offered by SAGE Certification. With the CompTIA Linux+ credential in hand, a candidate has already fulfilled half of the requirements for cSAGE.

Good news! I'm I the only one who had never heard of SAGE before though?

The System Administrator's Guild? No, I have heard of it, but it requires that you have real-world experience and thus may not be as popular with people using their certs as a way to "break in" to the IT market.

Mr. Linux Guy,
How do you "break in" to the IT market?
I heard a lot of diferent things from diferent people; I just wanted to know what was your way of doing it.

I have my A+, MCP, MCSA, and MCSE on W2K and I still can find a way to "break in". No body wants to take me in as an understudy to show me the ropes. I'm going for my Linux + and I'm even thinking of starting my own computer repair business since no body else will have me.

I hope it does not sound like I'm complaining, I'm just trying to find the way.

The main thing is just to not give up. Few people start off at the top or even at theor ideal job. If you have to, do some volunteer work, or start off at a helpdesk. In many cases there are people who start off in those jobs but don't stay long, and that would be a good opportunity for you. Once you are in, you will find it easier to use that as a springboard for another position that may interest you more later on.

Yes, that is what other people have said, to do volunteer work. I was going to try at my son's school but I do not know if they need any support ofter Hours since I do work the Morning Hours. I'm going to ask and see what they say.

Thanks Mr. Linux Guy

The main thing is to not give up. There are lots of places that will willingly accept volunteers (Linux might be a bonus since you don't actually have to pay for it. ). Anything that increases your knowledge and skills is good. FOr the first seven years that I was in IT, I was mainly doing COBOL and MVS Assembly programming, and it got to the point where I was so bored I would almost do anything to get out of it. I started studying and eventually I got a break (after about a dozen interviews). A lotof weight was given to my knowlegde that was not gotten on the other job, but which I had learned on my own. I learned C and Shell progamming as well as Linux, Apache and PC repair through books and my personal labs (none of the PC's I have at home cost me over 300 bucks). This was actually a very important factor in getting me the new job. Keep learning if you want to get it, and never give up. If you are doing something that you like, it will show and that will help as well. Between volunteerism and hobby work, you should learn quite a bit that could be useful in your quest for an IT position. DOn't be afraid to hit the pavement or talk to some people and see if they need help. It's a hassle, but it can help you a good bit.

That looks great but it says that the core and module must be taken within 6months of eachother. Time flies, I have been Linux+ for a year now exactly (well 10/31) ..

I work right now as database analyst, protem webmaster and I administer the Linux servers here. And whatever else anyone needs me to do. I was raised in Plaquemine, a little south of here, but have always worked in BR so am practically native.
