| I've just installed Red Hat but was having problems with setting up the monitor for xwindow system. I have the model number and all the requiste info but nothing seemed to work....I actually had the thing sussed once but a power cut meant I lost the settings and couldn't remember them!
Anyway I decided to skip the xconfigurator step and have installed redhat 6.
The problem is I now want to setup the monitor settings so the Gnome desktop works.
At the moment when I startx Gnome loads but most of the screen is black and no text is visible.
Hope someone can advise | |

| I have actually just read a thread below entitled xwinows problems.
Its says using xconfigurator or xf86config may help.
Well when looking t my manual it tells me I need to build an xf86config file with a text editor such as vi. Finally it mentions I can probe for setttings using the X server in a special mode but doesn't tell me how. My questions are
1)it seems a bit complicated writing the config file...I'm a newbie in this ield and have never used vi. Is this doable by some1 with little exp.
2)How do I run Xserver?
It is actually a bit more detailed in its explanation of xf86setup so for the moment I will be playing around with this

| at the command line run "setup." If you can try to use what the setup programs probe finds, unless you know the exact specs of your monitor.
