| I would like to ask why I can't install Red Hat 7.3 on my computer. After the computer restart, Disk 1 of Red Hat 7.3 was autobooted, when I select to install it in text mode, I type "text" <enter>. After about 10 seconds, a message was stated that "you are safely to reboot your system".
I have recorded part of the message displayed:
".......
Greetings
Red Hat Install init version 7.2 starting
mounting /proc filesystem ... done
mounting /dev/pts (Unix 98 pty) filesystem ... done
checking for NFS root filesystem read write ... done
checking for writeable /tmp ... yes
running install ...
running /sbin/loader
install exited abnormally -- received singal 11
sending termination signals --- done
sending kill signals -- done
disabling swap --
unmounting filesystem --
/proc done
/dev/pts done
you are safely reboot your system"
p.s. I have sucessfully installed 7.2 to this computer without any problems (however, no driver is available for sis740 chipset) during whole process.
Does anyone have clue about this?

| No sorry - I have no solution for the problem
Though I was a little bit more luckier than You when installing RedHat 7.3 --> installation got screwed up when I reached 2nd CD ... Though Windows isnt exactly a shining pearl either but at least installations are easy (though I have to do it @ home on monthly basis)
Have You thought about getting a mac?
well, suggestion is try again --> I will try to install redhat in the future. Hopefully Ill get lucky this time,
Take care | |

| Try making a boot floppy and loading it from that. I had a similar error while installing Red Hat 8.0 and that was my work around. | |

| Thanks both Margus & rohah!
Rohah, because I am a newbie in Linux.
Can you explain briefly how can I solve the problem step-by-step?
What it means "loading it from that" ?

| Signal 11 is SIGSEGV, a segmentation violation -- a program made an
invalid memory reference. This is often caused by an out-of-bounds
array reference, or attempting to dereference an uninitilized pointer. it is almost always a software bug. It can also be caused by a hardware problem, usually with your hard drive. You might want to try burning your CD's at a lower speed or installing via network or floppy if possible. What type of hardware are you running? Sometimes switching to an older piece of HW may be able to clear this up.

| Thanks Mr. Linux Guy and your valuable suggestion!
My computer's HW configuration is as follows:
1. Pcchips MB M840LR (I am not sure whether it is correct or not!) with sis 740 chipset for display;
2. 40G western digital (7200 rpm);
3. 196 MB Ram;
P.s. I would like to ask where can I found and how can I install sis 740 chipset for display driver for Red Hat 7.2!)
Thanks! |
