| Hi.i'm thinking of taking the course over at basiclinux.net....but I am a bit lost when it comes to ICQ.........is this like messenger.how do I get/install it.
Any advice would be most appreciated

| It's IRC . . . Internet Relay Chat . . . not ICQ. You can get a program to use it. When you connect, you specify what server you want to use, then you choose the channel. If you are running Windows, you can use http://www.mirc.com/ -- it's shareware, but they don't force you ro regsiter it. You can also use ircii, XiRCON, LeafChat, Turbopirch, BitchX, ksirc, xchat, or any one of dozens of other IRC clients.
IRC commands are issed by prepending them with a slash. For example, to choose the server you want, type:
/server irc.debian.org
To change channels, you use:
#BLT
All channels begin with a hash (#) sign. You can get more info at:
http://www.newircusers.com/java/ircmds.html
Once you get used to it, you wil find that the channels are basically customised chatrooms. Be nice though, sunce each room has a SysOp (like a moderator) and they can bump people if they act bad.
If this doesn't take care of what you need, let me know and I will try to aid.

| will go read site you bookmarked......hopefully I'll be upto speed soon enough to stat the course | |

| It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it, just a bit different from the IMs you might be used to. The IRC sessions for BLT are usually held on Sundays, but SamBozo is there most of the time, so feel free to drop in. Don't be afraid to tell everyone you are a newbie, as they are usually eager to help.
Good luck with the course.

| IMO xchat is very newbie-friendly. | |

| ....is that another channel? | |
| Mr. Linux Guy 2002-10-11, 5:42 am |
| No, "xchat" is the graphical IRC client for the GNOME desktop environment (one of the major desktops in Linux). It can be used as long as you have the GNOME libraries installed. But if you are still running Windows, it might be best to go with mIRC. | |
