I just finished downloading and installing Mandrake 9 and I am very impressed. I've used Mandrake since 7.1 and this one is by far the best. (Then again, each one is always better than the last :-)

What makes this one special is this is the distro that I am going to use to convince my boss to go Linux. It comes with Open Office and I have been able to successfully import and export Microsoft Office 2000 Word and Excel files without any problems. (Note that it doesn't recognize macros, but we don't use them much anyway.) KDE 3 is very slick and renders fonts very well. Font handling has always been a problem with Linux, but I have installed Arial, Times Roman and Courier True Type fonts without any problem.

My boss could care less about the features. His main concern is whether it can read and write to *.doc files and the price. This is certainly cheaper than Windows XP.

I also don't think support will be that great an issue. I plan to strip the install distro down to use the basics - OpenOffice, Mozilla, Evolution (an Outlook clone). But just to make sure, I am going to roll it out slow. I am going to try it out on two users before I introduce it to the rest.

If you have always been a Windows user and want to try Linux, this is the distro to try. I was able to install it on my PIII 550 with 256 RAM in less than 30 minutes! And I installed all sorts of extra stuff like the Apache server, MySQL, games, etc. I'm having fun!

Of course, I'm trying to download Red Hat 8. That one might be even better :-)

I downloaded Slackware and love it. So much so that this distro might be THE one I stick with for a long time.

Actually, you only need the 1st 3 ISO's to install Redhat 8.0, the 4th & 5th disks are source code rpm's, I just downloaded & burned the RH 8.0 ISO's last night, the upgrade awaits me when I leave work today. Mandrake 9.0 has been recieving good reviews from the other forums I take part in. Redhat 8.0 has created quite the stir with it's new GUI, GNOME looking like KDE, and KDE looking like GNOME. I am a Redhat fan and looking forward to the install tonight!

You only need to download the first two Mandrake 9 iso's (discs 1 and 2). I haven't had a chance to search the third Mandrake ISO, but I have read that it has something to do with language support. Depending on your primary language (if you're a non-English speaker), you might want to download the third disc too.

In a Nutshell: You only need to download the first two Mandrake CDs to get up and running.

Happy Linuxing!
