I recently took the HP-UX Admin exam and passed it. It was pretty difficult and there were a lot of NFS questions on it. If anyone is studying for it I would be happy to point them in the right direction.

I am. Any help would be appreciated. Randy and cat are the only other two people that I know of who have passed and they both said that it was a killer.

I am not studying for it at the moment, however I am planning on it, and I would really appreciate any information and help. I am actually studying all I can about everything I can, even if I don't write the exams in the near future....I be addicted to studying (how weird that might sound)

Hello,

Sorry I did not post this sooner. The exam is 3 parts.

The first part is 20 questions on basic UNIX. However, do not take it lightly. There were a lot of questions on variables and variable substitution. A couple of questions on basic commands, scripting etc. There were a couple of questions on rights but they were very basic.

Part two is 30 questions on HP-UX administration. These are the topics that were covered in detail. Fbackup and frecover, SAM, restricted SAM, user management and SD-UX. Overall, I did not think this section was that hard.

Part three is networking. There are 30 questions. On my exam there were around 8 on NFS. Know what a stale file handle is and other basic NFS problems and troubleshooting techniques. Also, know all commands relating to NFS administration. There were no questions on NIS but as this is an object I would be ready. There were questions on basic IP, masks, valid addresses etc. Also, and I was surprised at this, there were a couple of questions on networking hardware.

I used the Rahman book, "HP Certified - HP-UX Systems Administration. This book has taken a lot of abuse but it is a good guide and the second addition corrects most the errors in the first. There are a couple of practice tests on the web. Don't be fooled by the practice test on the HP website. The test is nothing like it. If you have a couple of years experience hands on with HP-UX and you study the exam should be no problem.

Best of luck,

Where did you find the practice exams? I only found the one at the HP site, but I knew the test couldn't be that easy. I have about a year experience with HP-UX and Linux, and am using Rehman's book and supplementing it with Pontiowski's.
