it has a 2 gig HD with a formatted FAT partition.... I boot it from the CD rom and press enter where it says "press enter to install red hat"

after that, a lil penhuin comes up in thw upper left hand corner and I see a bunch of lines scroll by..

after that I get to a BLUE screen and Thats it... The computer never stops responding, or locks up, it just seems like linux cant recognize and use my video card.. please help me out so I can become an expert like yall one day.. hehe

I have a few different guesses on what's causing this (inadquate memory for the graphical install (<64MB), old video card (pre-SVGA), exotic hardware...). Most of these can be gotten around by installing via text mode. This should allow you to install, or at least give you some idea of what the problem is. You can find information on how to do a text based install on
RedHat's website. While you're there you may want to check out the HCL too. I have a feeling the text based install may be difficult, so good luck.

I run into the same problem when I try to install in any other mode.. always end up at the blue screen

BUT

when i try to intstall in the

boot: driver dd

mode, i actually get a little thingy that says do you have a driver disk or not?

and it also says red hat 7.1 in the same window.

So, at this point, are you suggesting that I try another videocard? or try taking out my isa sound card and NIC, and only install redhat with the basic, simple setup?

thanks man

I would suggest trying another card.Removing your other cards would be a decision based on how much you want to learn.Manually configuring a linux box (albeit a tad frustrating) is the most beneficial from a learning standpoint.

Also, pick up running linux.Excellent intro to Linux.

I suggest at least switching your video card (assuming you have a spare), and preferably taking out everything that's not necessary to get RedHat installed. Linux doesn't like ISA devices for some reason, so there's a chance that that's your problem. If you have a winmodem you might as well take it out now because they're a pain to get going in Linux. Check the RedHat HCL. There are some devices, including certain chipsets that just don't like Linux. Also make sure your CD isn't scratched.

I agree with TW2001 that Running Linux is a good book to get. I've never read it, but I've heard a lot of good things about it.
