| I'm interested in hearing what those of you who use *nix commercialy use for backup software. I'm getting close to implementation with a FreeBSD server that will hold some important data, and am trying to decide what to use for backups. The only critical data will be on some Samba shares. | |
|
| I always just make tarballs and write them to offline storage. Cheaper than lots of the commerical prgs available. I did notice that some software called "Backup+" came with my Caldera 2.4 eDesktop, but I have never used it. | |

| Using tarballs sounds like a good option. It amazes me how efficient they are at compression. I just need to finish setting up the firewalls rules and setup backups before this server goes live. | |
|
| Well, remember they stand for Tape ARchives . . . so in a sense they are ideal at least for my purposes. There may be some more efficient compression software out there, but they're usually pricier as well. Is this your private net or one that you are designing at work? | |

| This is for work. It's not a very large server; just needs to provide file/print/vpn/Internet services to a dozen people. I'm using an ORB drive to backup the NT server that's being replaced, and I'll try to replace the ORB with a CDRW drive in the near future. The main reason being ORB disks cost around $30 a piece and CDRWs cost about $1, so I can get more backup redundancy that way. |
