Hi,

I am new to unix, and wanted to learn the basic over the summer break. I am a very good C/C++ programmer, and wanted to program stuff in a unix enviroment. I also want to buy book, I downloaded many Unix books on my pc, but I hate reading 100's of pages on a monitor Also, I have all the linux flavours available to me, from Mandrake to Redhate to BSD. I want to know which version of unix is the best for beginners. Thanks for your time,

Azam

Best for newbies? I would say: 1) Mandrake, 2) Caldera, 3) SuSE, 4) Red Hat (in that order). All basically easy to install and use, lots of docs. BSD, Slackware and Debian are for experienced users. Use them after you are comfy with UNIX. The best book I usually recommend is "Running Linux" by Walsh; it is very complete and thorough, you can't go wrong with it. Get one of the Vue or "Unleashed" books for the distro of your choice and work your way through it. ALso read your HOWTO's and you should be up to speed in about three months. Linux is written in C, so if you really want a challenge, you may try developing some device drivers for the kernel . . . this is hard, but a great way to learn more about OS's and machine level interaction.

Well, Randy said most of my thoughts on this. If you're into programming you'll probably love Linux. There are a lot of high quality (and for the most part free) developement tools out there.
