| Are all the Samba daemons running? If they are, try accessing the Samba shares from Windows through Samba's IP. Also make sure you've setup the appropriate user account(s) and file permissions.
If you're able to access the Samba server by typing in the IP address, you probably have an issue with Samba's naming daemon. If all this fails, you may want to try a port scan to see if anything's there.
It sounds like you're learning Linux quickly and have a fun job. Samba's one of the most usefully programs I've run across (hey, it's helping me to banish NT from my network @ work ).
You could setup a nice SSH-based VPN between your friends sites. I'm about to do something like that myself, and it looks like a lot of fun.

| Hahahaha . . . it sounds like you're hooked! One thing that lots of people don't mention about Linux is that it is very addcitive.
If you don't like the GUI, by the way, you can uninstall them or go to your inittab file and change the services that are started up. I rarely fire up my GUI unless I have to do something that involves graphics . . . I find it slows things down. As for Caldera being too GUI, orinted, you can cnahge that if you like . . . remember, this is Linux . . . edit a few text file and it will do what you tell it to.
Do you have all of the hosts on your network in the hosts.allow file? If they are not in there, your server will assume that they are not supposed to accept requests from those clients. ANd make sure your permissions are set right.
BIND8 is a subject in itself, after you're done with Running Linux, try checking out more of O'Reilly's titles, as they specialise in Linux books.

Is BIND complicated to seutp? I'm planning on setting up BIND for the first time Tuesday as a DNS caching server. I'm also planning on recompiling the FreeBSD kernel for the first time that day.

| Ive checked out a few simple configuration files for BIND.It doesnt look to difficult to implement (simple configuration).
I had problems with make.It could have been a compiler prob.Wierd error=1 ???
It looked as if it kept trying to create all the neccessary dirs and files and then exiting out of them.
So the WINS setup was really easy and is taking care of resolution. Its not what I really want but.....all my boxes are talking!
I plan to spend Mon/Tues pretty much hacking my Linux box.So we could go back and forth with it.

| I guess BIND is like Apache in that it's easy to get a simple setup, but is tuff to master.
I should have tried recompiling a kernel a long time ago, but just haven't gotten around to it. I'm being forced to now because FreeBSD's kernel has to be recompiled to enable NAT.
The project I'm working on right now is replaceing a Linux proxy server and NT domain/file/VPN server with a FreeBSD box. It's been a lot of fun, but I only go into work once week and work on it when I'm not putting out fires, so it'll be a while before it's up.

| Rebuilding and compiling a kernel is not as bad as it sounds. I always do it after an install as it improves performance. Just don't forget to make backups just in case. | |

| Rebuilding the kernel and setting up a BIND caching server was fairly easy. There were only a few settings that needed to be changed to get BIND going, and recompiling the kernel wasn't any more difficult then installing an app from its source typically is. | |

| I know . . . it sounds scary at first, but is actually quite simple . . . I find installs to be a bigger pain personally. ANyway, I sit my HP-UX this Friday . . . I'll let you guys know how it turns out. | |

| Good luck on the HP-UX exam. It's too bad HP-UX hasn't been ported to PCs or I'd give it a try. | |

| Good luck to you randy! | |
|
| Thanks. Well, so far I see very little to distinguish it from other flavours of UNIX but for the administration tools . . . for the most part it's about like the other ports that I have tried. |
