Hi everybody !!!

I installed RH 7 everything went ok , but it couldn't recognize my modem,so I checked it up and found out that I have one of thoses so called Winmodem.
How could I find out if a modem works with Linux before I buy and install it ?
Could anyone recommend a good modem at a good price ?

Thanks in advance

"Winmodems" are software based modems, so that's why they usually don't work with Linux. There are some "Linmodems", but it's a pain to set these up, so I wouln't recommend trying. You want to get a hardware based modem. They typically cost more, but perform better (faster and less CPU overhead).

Most non-USB external modems are hardware based, and just about everything else is software based.

I purcahsed a US Robotics external 56k modem a little while ago. Haven't gotten around to testing it out with *nux yet, but I've heard that it's well supported. I'll let you know how the install goes whenever I get around to it.

I think www.linuxnewbie.org has a list of supported modems; they did a few months ago anyway.

Hope this info helps.

If your modem is in a PCI slot, it is very likely a WinModem. I always use an external (non-USB) hardware modem. I find that most of them will work fine. Check the hardware compatibility list at your distro's site, but I find that using external modems saves me a lot of time and frustration.

The ones with the Lucent chip is pretty good, like those from Creative. Can be used in a PCI slot and is not external nor a Winmodem, if you prefer the internal type without the need for an additional adapter.

Hey guys !!!

Thank you very much for the info and the links .I tried to download a driver for my modem to work with Linux but the transfer rate was too low and I gave up.I would like try this driver just to see how to set it up and make sure that works, but I think I'm gonna to spend some more dough and buy a more decent hardware.

Love this forum

Sounds like a good idea. The speed difference between a Winmodem and a hardware based modem is very noticeable.
