Author not sure - LPIC or SAIR? or Linux+?

can someone give me reasons why I would go for one of the above mentioned certificates?

I was thinking about LPIC, but now I'm not sure if I should really take it - some people mentioned that both LPIC and the SAIR cert will probably be merged in Linux+.

Linux+ on the other hand is only in beta, and there isn't too much material about it yet.

btw, how much do you have to pay for each SAIR exam? that's an importanat factor for me too (thus making Linux+ with only 90$ an interesting option).

what would you do in my place? take the LPIC as I had planned?

all answers are highly appreciated

I'd just go ahead and take the LPIC. I think it will be worth more than the others, as it has more than one level (three are planned, as far as I know). All CompTIA's exams are for beginners, and I don't know much about SAIR's exams just yet. They are 100 bucks each.

thanks alot - again that was very helpful.

I'll take the LPIC, shouldn't be too difficult I hope.

are the CompTIA exams really that easy? in that case, I'll probably take their network+ in addition to the LPIC.

thanks again

In my opinion, the CompTIA exams are extremely easy (I have the A+, Network+, and i-Net+ from CompTIA), and they are all aimed at entry-level people with about six months of experience and all of their certs but the A+ and CDIA are less than two years old.

The SAIR/GNU is quite tough: there are four exams to pass just to be a LCA. The LPCI Level requires two exams.

RHCE on the other hand, has a hands on component and is really expensive, but is the most recognised among the Linux exmas, which are really vanity exams. Perhaps now, but maybe not in 1-2 years.

I recommend LPIC too since you can advance further with it. Something to consider though, is that there's been a trend lately of CompTIA's exams being accepted more and more by other certification providers. If this continues, Linux+ may end up applying to multiple certification paths.

CompTIA exams are easy. I thought A+ was relatively easy, and Network+ was pathetically easy.

RHCE is by far the most valuable Linux certification, but I don't suggest going for it unless you're already a guru.

thanks to all of you, that was very informative.

I've decided to go&take the LPIC as well as the network+ during in the next two and a half months - I think that's realistic, especially if network+ is so easy (btw, what study materials can you recommend for that?)

greetings & thanks

P.S.:no, I'm not a Linux guru - I'm a FreeBSD guru, but since there are no certifications for that...anyway I've been running Linux for quite some time (a few years in my home network) now and feel quite comfortable in it. the command line is almost the same for both so...

If you're a BSD guru, you're pretty close to being a Linux guru! There are some differences, but most of the stuff is pretty similar. For the Net+, I used David Groth's book from Sybex, and made a 97 on the test. It really was too easy in my opinion, but don't take that to the bank . . . it is never a good idea to underestimate an exam.

not sure how much each sair test is, i think its ~$100USD though.it has 3 levels Linux cert. Admin, LCEngineer, and MasterLCE, MLCE isnt finished yet, each level has 4 tests, for the first level If you pass either the "Install and configure" or the "System Admin" test you will be a Linux Cert Professional. doesnt look too tough to get an LCP, and Sair is pretty big around here, but i live where it was made.. i would say Sair and Rhce, are the big name linux certs..

SAIR is a lot harder than LPI, though.
