Any kind that you can write! *nix is more stable and extensible than most other OS's, and that is a big plus for many people. They especially excel at working as servers because if their stability and reliability. As for applications, it varies. Check out www.freshmeat.com or www.gnu.org to find out if there are apps available for yout box. There is a good bit of software available, depending on what your interests are.

The main reasons are performance, reliability, security, price, versatility, the open source philosophy and control.

Linux and Unix are both heavily used as servers, especially for web and high end applications. A lot of "power users" like to have one of these (esp Linux) on their desktop as well.

The sites that Randy listed are good sources for finding out what apps are available. Generally, there's a *nix equivelant for most of the Windows apps that are out there, but not necessarily an exact duplicate. There are even some programs out there that allow you to run Windows programs from within *nix (WINE, VMWare...).
