Author Just Pass My RHCE Exam

I am really happy that I have passed my RHCE exam yesterday. This is my second attempt.

I would like to share my experience here but not the examination question or answer and so please don't ask me (as I have signed an agreement) :P

When you click to see this passage means that you are in some senses you are really feeling interested in RHCE and this is what exactly I have done in last 2 months. What I would like to share is my first failed exam experience.

There are two main reasons that I failed in the first exam:
- I allocated not much time to study the configuration of different server setting
- My bad strategy during the first debug exam.

During the first exam, I had my debug section first. I had finished my first task very quickly. However, I got stuck in my second question. Since I can finish the first question quickly and I deemed that I can also tackle the second question within a short time. Unfortunately, I spend over 1.5 hour and still cannot figured out what is the solution while I just completed my first question within 20 minutes. After that, I surrended for the second question. I then had a little bit worry for my questions followed by since you never know what is the difficulty of the questions. I can answer the third question within 20 minutes. For the last part of the question, since only I just got 20 minutes, however, I haven't enough time to accomplish all tasks for the last questions. Even though you have done 90% of the tasks correcly. However, you got 0 mark because of your 10% unfinished. So, at the end I just got 50 marks for the DEBUG section.

Second part is the Multiple choice test. Test was easy. I got 88 marks.

After 2 tests, I got 138 marks and I must obtain 100 marks in the third part in order to pass. Under this pressure, I perform really really poor for this part. For this server installation test, I just got 68 marks.

As a result, I failed.

After this, I really study hard. Do many many practical at home. Do many server configurations, do read a lot of HOW-TO manuals.

Yesterday, I passed my RHCE exam. I felt excited.

I highly recommend if you want to get a Linux certificate, RHCE would no question should be your first choice. If you think it is expensive, I would say it is not. You need at least US$100x7 to obtain your MCSE certification for just 100% MC test while during RHCE, there is a RHCX to examine the test. And I believe RetHat would not earn a lot from this.

Frankly speaking, you definitely will learn a lot (certainly by yourself ) throughout the process of getting RHCE. And after that I believe you will switch from other Linux's distribution to RH after you have studied it hard.

Good Luck to those prepare to sit for RHCE

Welcome to the club, kwoksir . . . I passed my RHCE on the first try, but just barely . . . the troubleshooting lab almost killed it for me. I agree though, you do learn a ton in preparing for and taking the exams. I still prefer Slackware though.

Congratulations on that. Please, I intend starting my Redhat cert. and would be glad if you can recommend some good books or web sites which aided you in passing your exams. I already have the RedHat 7 operating system but i am yet to install it on my 1Ghz system
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, actually the manual which is used in RH300 course is a good reference that include all requirement during the examination. The lab at the end of the manual is excellent for real experience test.

There is no good book for studying RHCE. I bought one from SYBEX (the thicker one) but not very useful since the version they published is outdated (the current vrsion is 7.1)

I recommend you photocopy the "Table of Content" page of any RHCE book and try you best to find out how to accomplish the task or server setting.

Official Guide/Customization Guide comes with RH CD-ROM is extremely helpful. I sometimes study the HOW-TO materials.

Good Luck

About 2 years experience of using RedHat while using about 3-4 weeks to study the exam material.

If you are new to linux, I think it is not very suitable to take RHCE as your first linux exam. You may try TurboLinux Cerified Engineer / LPI.

Real experience is essential to pass.
Hope this may help you.

I agree real experience mean for RHCE.

I have been using RH for about a little more than a year and still I am not ready.

Many new candidate just want to jump right into.

Suppose job, experience, then certification.
Now certificiation, then job, no experience!

Bad...

Yes, apart from real experience mean for RHCE, you can really learn a lot through the certification process.

thanks kwok,
i guess I will start off with the lpi,

Good idea. The LPI is a better starting point than the RHCE!
