hello everyone,

i'm looking for some help here. I installed redhat on a laptop. I now have a better machine to use for my redhat test server and i am trying to fdisk the laptop's hardrive so that i can reinstall win98. When I run fdisk, i have a 20meg and a 2gb partition. I can delete the 20meg partition, but i can't do anything with the 2gb partition. fdisk sees it as an extended partion with logical drives. sort of. . . When I go into delete the logical drives it says there aren't any. When I go into delete the extended partition, it tells me i can't do that until i delete the logical partitions.

do i have to use a special utility to get rid of the linux files system? I tried looking for a low-level format util on hitachi's site, but they say to just use fdisk /mbr. that didn't work either.

I'd recommend starting up the RedHat instalation again, and when you get to the part where you create/delete partitions, wipe out all the linux ones, then reboot the PC. That should get rid of them.

FDISK can be funny about non-M$ partitions. One time I deleted all the logical (Linux or BSD, I forget which) partitions in an extended partition, then attempted to delete the extended partition. FDISK said it wasn't empty. So I rebooted the PC (seems to fix most M$ problems), went to the view screen, and all the logical partitions that I'd just deleted reapeared. At this point I deleted all the logical partitions again, and was able to delete the extended partition without any further trouble.

WARNING: THIS ERASES THE ENTIRE DRIVE.

You can easily remove all the partitions on your hard drive using this DEBUG script.

Before you do ANYTHING make sure that the drive you want to erase is the ONLY drive in the computer.

Boot from a DOS or Win98 boot disk, doesn't matter what extras it has, as long as it has DEBUG.EXE.

Type these at the command line, the first one opens the DEBUG utility. Hit Enter after each line. After you have typed in these commands, shut off the computer, and turn it back on.
Note, the "xxxx:0100" is NOT typed, just the "MOV ..."

debug <Enter>
-F 200 L1000 0 <Enter>
-A CS:100 <Enter>
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301 <Enter>
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200 <Enter>
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1 <Enter>
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80 <Enter>
xxxx:010C INT 13 <Enter>
xxxx:010E INT 20 <Enter>
xxxx:0110 <Enter>
-G <Enter>

After this is done, you can just run fdisk and create your new partitions.
