| I know linux is more stable than windows. I want to run it on my server. but i have to get to know it better. How can i set linux into dual boot mode with windows98/me?? | |

| You'll need to partition your drive up so that you have a Windows partition for ME, and two Linux partitions -- one for the OS and one to be used as the swap file. The easiest way to do this is by using PowerQuest's Partition Magic 6.0. (PM < 6.0 is NOT acceptable for WinME.) A stripped down version comes with Caldera, and that distro is relatively easy to use, but has limited funstionality and I am not sure if it works with WinME. You could also use the full version, but it is kind of pricey (around 70 bucks) or use the free but less intuitive FIPS utility. Then you install the OS -- many distros allow you the option of installing from Windows. before installing, go to the site of the distro you want to install and make sure that all of your hardware is supported and that you do not have any weird stuff like WinModems in your machine. If you choose a distro like Mandrake or Caldera you should have little problems making the switch. PM comes with BootMagic, which allows you to choose which OS you want to boot from. Otherwise, if you have more than one HDD, you can shoose for Windows to remain on one and intall Linux on the other and use your CMOS as your boot manager. Also, make sure to read the instructions of the distro that you choose. | |

| hi friend ,
Now days to install a linux( redhat ,Caldera ) on any machine is very simple . But in your case you require dual booting with win 98 . so first of all check out that 98 is installed on which file system . if it is on fat16 then you are very lucky that you don't have to much more task for dual booting . Because Linux is by default recognising Fat 16 file system.
so for installation just start and after word he will ask you for partition then create two partition one is linux partition and other one is swap partition , then don't forgot to select the proper display configration other wise you will looes your GUI .
