with W2k and Mandrake. Is it suggested that I install Mandrake or W2k first?

Thanks

Always install the Micrsoft OS first, then the Linux. MS seems to not like having other OS's preinstalled. If you also have PM 6.0, your life may be a bit easier. If you have separate physical drives, it would be better to install one OS on each drive to save yourself some headaches, but if you don't have that option, then install Win2K first. Let me know how it goes.

I have Partition Magic 5.0, I hope that does the trick. The machine I am installing on already has w2k on it and when I tried to install Mandrake it gave partition errors. I think because it's Fat32.. So I am going to repartition, and reinstall w2k, How do you suggest I format the Drive. I have almost a 5 gig HD. thanks for your guidance...

NAK, NAK, PM 5.0 is not for Windows 2k!!! Check powerquest's web site to see what they have to say about it, but I think version 6.0 was designed after Win2K and earlier versions may not do as well with it. It might be possible, but check the web site docs just in case first. See http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/index.html for more info.

OOh yeah, It definetly doesnt work with w2k, but I was going to reformat the partitions and then install. I can boot the computer with Partition magic and just format the partition and then reinstall w2k. If you could suggest to me how I should set up my partitions that would be great.

Well, I am not too familiar with Win2K, have only used it a couple of times. You could try FDISK if you are starting out clean and won't hurt anything, but remember that destroys what's already on the disk, and you'll have to reinstall all that exists on it now. There are other utilities that can manage these things like FIPS (see http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/) but they are tricky to use. To avoid headaches, try getting PM 6.0 or another partitioning utility . . . PowerQuest's utilities are kind of steep, but they are the safest to use. You may want to just install Win2K and wait on the the Mandrake until you get PM 6.0. if you have PM 5.0 there may be a way of getting a discount for an upgrade but I haven't checked up on this. Might want to wait until ccieTobe shows up as I think he is in the know with regards Win2K and linux dual-booting. He may be able to give you some more knowlegeable advice than I have. Here's an article that I found on the net about it: http://www.vovveti.com/linux/Linux-...000-booting.htm -- it was mean for Red Hat but may be of some help.

DiskDrake, the partitioning program that you run across in Mandrake's setup process allows you to resize Windows 2000 paritions in NTFS and FAT(32/16). I've had Win2k (Server & Advanced Server) dual boot setups before and it works without any troubles as long as you install Windows first, THEN Linux. This guideline goes for all M$ OSs.
