| No you can not. Not the root password. | |

| There's a key combination (alt-break, or ctrl-break?) that you can press during bootup to bypass the login, and accomplish this. I've never tried it myself, so I'm not very clear on the specifics. If you have any *nix books, they should have more info. If not, try out some of the Linux websites out there.
Your system was probably compromised through a well known bug that exists in versions four and eight of BIND. Once you've regained controll, update to a version that's immune to this exploit. There was a thread on this earlier, located here http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...?threadid=13180

| Hi edgroot,
You can reset the root password.
Just reboot your Linux normaly, and at the
'LILO: ' prompt, type : linux single
Voila, your linux boot directly to root
shell, you can change the password by
using command passwd.
But if your box already hacked, I really
really recommend you to re-install everything
from scratch. Why, because you never know
what the hacker done to your linux system.
May be he/she is not just change the root
password, maybe there is another hidden
backdoor so he can come back later, or
he put some sniffer to capture
all traffices on your LAN, and he can get
another password from your other linuxes.

| I cant thank you enough guys...Thanks a lot....

I'm gonna try your recommendations...

| Remember to always choose a strong password . . . thid is very important and it is not very hard either. Try 7.gateS.oF.helL . . . that isn't so hard to remember but it is much harder to crack than a regular password. And try it change it every so often. It will save you a lot of headaches. |
