any comments or advice about phatlinux??? also any tips or comments about using partition magic and RHL or Lmandrke??

2001-02-18, 9:01 pm

If I remember correctly Phatlinux is Slackware based. Slackware is the most Unixy, fast and stable Linux distro that I've run across. It's also one of the most complicated though. A lot of people use RedHat, but I'm not impressed by it. Mandrake is very easy to use. There's not much to say about parition magic. It's a usefull and easy to use program.

thz for replying the activity seems sparse in this forum.
yah i spent hours dwl phat after install??? it seems to be unresponsive or maybe i didnt install it proper. i also thought(didnt read small print)that i would receive a GUI and be allow to use Netscape with it...not so,in freeware ver it seems it CLI only. say lavee. any idea what will be the most likely flavor of the Linux Family for most apps?? the one that should be learned for most apps?
im not sure if this is the proper question or not but is slackware gui ?... probably an option. comments welcomed lol every body

Slackware's default GUI is GNOME, but with any Linux distro, you can pretty much choose whaever desktop look and feel that you want. The other big contender is KDE, but as you can alter the code if you don't like the way either one works, they're easily customisable. Before uing your GUI, you need to set your monitor Horizontal and Vertical sync, refresh rates, monitor type, modelines, graphics card settings (i.e., type and onboard RAM) before the GUI will come up. If you have PHAT Linux, try typing 'startx' to start X or if you have KDE, type 'kde' to bring up the GUI. Most likely, you will have some settings to tweak before getting it right. You may get this infamous No. 111 error with a number of error messages that mean nothing to you, or your GUI will come out many times too huge for your screen. Thus just means your video card and monitor settings need to tuned. BTW, incorrect monoitor settings can generally damage your hardware, so be sure to read your manual as well as seeing what settings you have listed in the Windows Display Applet (under the 'advanced' tab). To start tweaking after you have your info type 'XF86Setup' or 'xf86config' (case is important). If worse comes to worse, you may have to manually edit the XF86Config file, but that is usually not necessary. Check out http://www.xfree86.org/ for general information and http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/XFree...-Timings-HOWTO/ for specifics. Let me know if you have any more problems.

Suse is the distro with the most included apps that I've seen. RedHat is probably the distro that has the most add-on app support.

You're right about the activity. Some days there are more Unix related posts in the Cisco forums then there are here.

2001-02-19, 9:41 am

Yes, SuSE is famed for it's "everything but the kitchen sink" approach. It's loads of fun to play with, but takes up a bit of space. Yes, this isn't exactly the most happening forum here, with about 10 people making 90% of the posts! Hopefully that will change soon.

randy and ccie2b thz u guys?(cyber entities) for giving me some feedbck and encouragement. ill try and keep the comments about suse and rh memory. besides my major problem of trying to figure out what is wrong with my less than complete phatlnx install/enigma...i have asked my myself a quest with all the flavors "what will most likely be the one used by an employer or commercially?" i guess since no one knos the future or we'd be notifying our brokers, then only an edu quess would be the most likely favorite?...and thats the one that i should be learning...back to my phatlnx projct, i guess if had $20 for a full cd ver then the install would probably be easier to make...so maybe ill store the 237mgs zip and go on and use Part Magic cd to install either RH 7.0 or Mandrk 6.1 onto my HD along with windows.
by the way which one of those flavors would either one of you chose? and reasons?... keeping in mind that i am after a a couple of those certs(netwrking, routrs, A+) that you cert sponges have. thx for replys i keep checking the forum
lol people?

Glad to help.

The most commercially used distro is definitely RedHat. The only reason I can see for this is RedHat's excellent customer support. My personal favorites are Mandrake (easy to use), Slackware (Unixy), and Freesco (Linux router that fits on a floppy).

2001-02-19, 3:48 pm

ahh randy...i think that maybe for the time that the phatlnx file maybe a little big for a newbie like me so ill start with sometime more familiar like Mandrke or RH and maybe later come back to Phat...you mentioned the ways of setting the monitor specs for safe implementation...great to kno and keep in mind with the flavors but i am having problems with even installing a proper CLI. its telling me not enough memory in buffers and a few more parameters that are not rite for install..its frozen or non responsive in a loop in think...anyway i spend to much time and not enough with my other important studies and projects, so i think i just need to get my feet wet and just learn one of the more(easier?) familiar flavors and let phat go for a while.ill chck back later. lol ionplaner
OH yes to add rhl or mandrke do i have to get the remnants of phat out of DOS?

2001-02-19, 4:00 pm

good ccie ..i just happen to have all three.maybe ill partition mandrke 6.1 to C: first...other studies...i have a very stubborn 486 that does not want to see cdrom or install linux to C: easily. i am going to get that stubborn one to work eventually then ill play with aHomeAreaNetwork packet switched and addressed by a linux OS. will be later. login out ionsurfer

The most popular distro for business is Red Hat, with Caldera catching up every day. If you are really looking for something that a business (especially in the U.S.) might want, it will be one of those two. Slackware and Debian tend to be more for hackers that like to mess around with computers a lot, and don't mind the extra headaches which nearly always turn out to be learning experiences and which help you understand your OS better. Many of these "no partition" Linuces are based on Slackware . . . NOT the best at all for a beginner who wants to ease into it. Still, I would encourage you to not give up entirely on it . . . these less automated distros do have their drawbacks, but all the same they allow you to learn a great deal more about your machine and they really allow a lot of freedom once you get past the basics. But for a newbie, there is just sooooo much information to have to absorb, that it tends to put them off. But if you decide to start off with RH or Caldera, I think you will have fewer probs . . . but READ THE DOCS FIRST!!! Make sure those distros support your HW by checking at their websites. Unlike many a Microsoft installers seem to think, the time to read the instructions is BEFORE things go wrong! Let is know if you run into any more probs.

i will keep your replys in memory. i am going to keep the phatlnx file certainly.apparently i need to devote some more time to understanding and reading the docs more carefully.i am suppose to balance between ccna class study and outside interest but i have tendency to spend more time with the latter to the detriment of grades. no i havent given up on phatlnx but i really need to spend some time with the internetwrking material. hopefully from time to time i will contact you or post again for help getting the phat one installed and working. as it stands now the program is installed but not workin proper. i started it in '/phat/' folder but somewhere or another i didnt put get the buffer memory load proper.it is also hard for me to get into DOS from shutdwn and the restart in DOS ? i would like to see if i could add proper memory to the buffer.or would it be easier to uninstall??? and remove the file as is and start all over? advice welcomed.

I often had the same problem in college. I would take a class that sounded interesting, but when I was in the class would seem to devote most of my energies to something ELSE that I found interesting. Then, quite predictably, when the class was over, my interest was renewed in it all over again. I seem to be a bit contrary that way. But I know it is hard to juggle several different interests. I also, am into internetworking (as is, I assume, ccieToBe, from his handle), but at the moment I seem to be focusing more on Linux -- it is a bit cheaper than routers you know.

Am not sure what to tell you about the Phat Linux problems that you are encountering at the moment as I have not used that distro personally. I can tell you, however, that what may be of a big help is joining a mailing list or newsgroup that devotes itself to such topics . . . .there is usually at least one such group centered around any one distro that you might be into that could help you get going and answer some of yoru questions. Most people in these groups are very helpful and most of them are fairly active, but as always, lurk around a bit, read the FAQ's and docs first so you won't sound like an idiot by asking questions that have already been asked and answered earlier on. If I come acros any groups for Phat Linux, I'll post them here for you.

Speaking of the devil, as it were, here is a BB for Phat Linux: http://stop.at/phatlinux -- best of luck!

2001-02-20, 3:15 pm

I'm actually more interested in internetworking then *nix, but like you said, *nix is cheaper. *nix applies more to my current job too.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm a high school senior attending college, so to finish out my graduation requirements I'm having to take a lot of the liberal arts type classes (help!). Because of this I'm spending a lot of time reading (ie I have to read the Odyssey for one of the classes), so that by the time I finish with them, I don't feel like going through the Cisco books. This summer I'm going to try to take only classes that don't require much reading (math & technology) so I can actually go through these books and take the CC*P exams.

2001-02-20, 4:19 pm

Well, actually, I have always loved reading, but only rarely what my teachers at school assigned to me. It seems I have always had too many interests. At the moment I am looking to learn a lot about Unix/Linux since it seems so nice to be learning something new and interesting as compared to the old windows stuff, but internetworking is a lot of fun and I have a big interest in that as well. But what I meant above was that oftentimes, I would begin reading up on a subject like Diff. Eq. and I would get interested enough in it to take an advanced course in it at college. Then upon entering the class, rather than going at it full-force, I would go at 60-70% steam while I would by that time have found something else to work on in my spare time. It's always been that way with me . . . it's like there's too many things I wanna know!

By the way, you really are knowlegeable for someone who is still a senior in high school, your replies are always very informative and helpful. Anyway, best of luck to you with your Cisco stuff.

2001-02-21, 4:26 pm

Wow, you took differential equations out of pure interest, not because it was a requirement? That's impressive.

I enjoy reading to, but after a few hours of it, I've had enough for the day, and would rather play with the toys then read about them.

Thanks for the complement. I hope to progress to the point where I'll need a new screen name

2001-02-22, 10:35 am

Well, I took diff. eq. because at that time I was much interesetd in non-linear dynamics (chaos theory). I have always been more of an idea guy than a tinkerer and can spend endless hours at the books, whether math, physics, lit or history, but have recently discovered how much fun the toys can be!

And I meant the compliment . . . based on the level of some of your replies, I would have guessed that you were a 30-something sysadmin. In ten years, you're gonna be dangerous!
