Are the different flavours of linux similar to each other like the different flavours of dos were (ms dos, pc dos, dr dos). As in most of the commands are the same, the interfaces are quite similar?

Most are similar. The main two GUI's are GNOME and KDE -- you can check their websites to check some screen shots out, but they nearly the same in pverall appearance. The commands are all the smae mainly -- some utilties are unique to certain distros, the installation procedures are different, the overall look and feel varies, some are more stable than others, but in general they are all basically the same. Some like SuSE come with tons of extra software, others like Salcakware are more oriented towards hackers and UNIX freaks, Debian is more for developers, and so on. It's mainly a matter of personal preference, but if you can handle one, you will feel pretty much at home with the others.

The main differences lie in where the config files are kept and the startup files are processed. But the command syntax is usually the same. When they are different, the main reason is that one distro uses the SysV setup while the others use BSD type startup...example Debian = BSD, RedHat = SysV.
