Can anyone tell if the following material are enough to study for the Linux+ Exam?

1) Mike Meyer's A+ All in one (because Linux+ has much hardware objectives in it)

2) LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell by Oreilly

3) Rute tutorial ( http://rute.sourceforge.net)

and if thats not enough i might as well read the following guides on LDP:

Linux System Administrators Guide
Linux Network Administrators Guide
Linux Security Guide

I think those three sources (along with a Linux box of course) would be more then enough to pass the Linux+ exam along with some of the LPI track. I suggest getting a Linux+ specific book though. I'm sure these three books have all the information you'd need, but they also cover a lot of other material that's nice to know, but not needed for the Linux+ exam. Having a Linux+ book would help you to focus on what's needed.

Thanks for posting the rute link. That looks like a very good tutorial.

I defiantly would not go that route.

If you are interested in going for the Linux+ exam then wait until a few more Linux+ study guides are on the market and review them then pick the best one.

I would not buy Mike Meyer's A+ book to use to study for a Linux exam. That is just stupid, same with buying a LPI Linux Certification book (guy, that is for the LPI Linux cert not Linux+) Don't waist your money.

Get yourself a good Linux+ study guide
that is Linux+ focused and will have everything in it that you need to know for the Linux+ exam. If you want to pass the first time get the cert specific book.

Don't guess as to what you have heard
and think is on the exam.
CompTIA exams are the weirdest ones around
so you will need the inside scoop on to what to expect on the Linux+ exam.
A good Linux+ specific book, will cover the exam objectives fully. Including the hardware section.

I am studying for the Linux+ exam as well
I saw the Sybex Linux+ book out there, and
took a look at it. It is not bad but it's missing the hardware section.
Sybex is starting to suck!

I am going to wait until a few more Linux+ study guides come out on the market and
find a really good one that covers all the objectives.

It would be a good idea. There is a lot of hardware questions on the Linux+ and you have to know your Linux pretty well, but it is basically a very easy test. I took the beta and aced it and I don't have that much experience with Linux.

I have to explain few things.

I bought the A+ book not to study for Linux+. I am planning to do A+ actually after getting my Network+.

Same story with LPI. I figured i do LPI cert, but now i heart CompTIA has a Linux+ cert. did you guys discuss yet the differences between LPI and Linux+?

but as u recommended i will get a Linux+ specific book anyway besides those sources and get my A+ first before i take Linux+ that would help i guess

Sounds like a good plan. LPI's considered more in depth then Linux+. If you've already started on Network+ don't stop now, but if not I recommend studying the A+ material first. IMO the Network+ material builds on A+ to a certain extent.

Thanks CCIE2Be

This is my plan for now:

Doing Network+ now and almost done.

Next step is one of the following:

A+
Linux+ or LPI
CCNA
MCSA

I have all the material except a specific book on Linux+ (got LPI Oreilly book)

So i dont know what is next until i get over with the first exam.

I think u shall go for MCSA and CCNA before hit the Linux. Both are more related together, but it is depend on your knowledge...

I hope these certifications help u, but they will not get u a job.

I heard the IT field and jobs are slowing down globally specially in USA. Let's hope by the time i get more experience and certs the situation will be ok in UK or Netherlands to get at least an entry level job.

I thought I'd try linux (I've been using it for long time)and get over with it quickly before
- CCNA (never tried cisco stuff before and dont have access to a router/switch)

- MCSA (long track and needs at least several months of studying)

I'll do A+ after network+ thats a sure thing.

out of curiousity, why are you doing Net+ before A+? .. if you fully understand whats on the LPI, you will pass the Linux+, read the documentation from LDP, that was a good idea, read the posts/replies on linux newsgroups, like linuxnewbie.org, check out the Linux+ cramsession at cramsession.com, Rute tutorial is good, also check out linuxcommand.org , there are a bunch of A+ q's on it. but most of them are very easy like "how many pins does this version of scsi have" etc .. and if your an experienced linux geek/admin you could probably walk in there and pass it .. well just my thoughts .. the cramsession for Linux+ is very good .. more indepth than the one for the Sair Linux "Installation and Configuration" test, surprisingly .. well good luck ..

- As a side note, has anyone seen the new IBM commercial? Its pumping up linux! first time ive seen a mainstream commercial from ibm for linux ..

There is the ExamCram Linux+ book that just came out. Its a helpful book but its not very detailed. I think the Sybex Linux+ plus this new book would help in passing the Linux+ exam. Personally though, I like the LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell.

Thanks for the suggestions.

To answer your Q: I actually started with A+ using Mike's 1200 pages book (yep!) then i took a look at Sybex's Network+ book and i found myself reading through it because i was always into networking technology more than hardware. I figured i could get Net+ in a shorter period to me started. Later i can dedicate more time just for A+ and finish that 400lbs book

When i am done with it i will check out Linux+ (I am not an uber nerd just an intermediate slackware user), thats if i find get tempted to read the Linux book before finishing my A+ again!
