want to learn unix from scratch? help

| Hi all,
CURRENTLY STUDYING FOR MY CISCO CCNA. I AM ALSO INTERESTED IN LEARNING UNIX, STARTING FROM THE BASICS OF COURSE. I HAVE DONNE A CUSTOMISED UNIX COURSE BEFORE BUT IT WAS CONFUSING AND IT WAS A 2 DAY COURSE. PLEASE ADVISE ON A VERY GOOD BOOK. ALSO, IF I DONT HAVE ANY OPERATING SYSTEM TO PRACTICE ON, IS THERE ANY VIRTUAL LAB CD ROM THAT IS AVAILABLE TO PRACTICE I.E RIGHT NOW , I HAVE A VIRTUAL LAB CD FOR MY CCNA . IT HAS GOT 3 ROUTERS AND 2 SWITCHES IN BUILT. i DONT NEED REAL ROUTERS TO PRACTICE
I WILL APPRECIATE ANY HELP AND ADVICE | |

| Respected Sir,
I am working with a computer institute at Asia , INDIA , Maharashtra , Kolhapur . We have 12 computers with 7 windows 2000 Profrssional , 1 windows NT 4.0 server and 2 Windows 2000 Advanced Server .
Some of the systems we have installed as Red Hat Linux 7.1 Server and few Red Hat Desktops .
We have one genius Center Head who looks always look for the new things in Linux .Also we have tow another collagues named Mr. Shakun Shah and Mr. Yuvraj Nipanikar who always try to investigate new things from their computers allocated and also try to investigate the differences from IIS 5.0 and Apache Web Server ( Linux IIS , which is much much better than IIS with even good fascilities.)
I really feel that one if can manage to setup minimum 3 computers with a good configures and practise on it along with some good Press books ,it would be more than sufficient to easily clear the exam after a very hard practise on the setup what I would sya . Because this has really given me a good base to understand what Linux is exactly made for and why so .
There is no 'simulated' CD environment as afr I see for RHCE . So if there is please tell me also .
Minimum I would suggest U to install one Linux 7.1 computer . This will help U to understand what strength it requires to install it because it is that easy as M$ . and that to the various appliication name e.g anaconda NSMAIL , and many...
There are many things that no book or a CD can cover . The best things that U can understood is the self experiencing the hidden things from it by doing self installation and self working on it .
That's enough I think.

| I think you can pick up a Linux distro that runs on a CD and allows you to poke around and do basic UNIX commands like ls and uptime. But to get a real feel for Unix, you'll have to get the real thing. Invest a few bucks and buy a cheap Pentium II box, get a copy of RedHat 7, and start plugging away. As Sandi pointed out, the best way to learn is experience.

| There's no need to use a simulator. If you have a fast Internet connection you can download a lot of distros for free. Otherwise you should be able to pick up a copy of *nix for under $20. Unless you feel strongly otherwise I suggest starting out with Linux.

| If you don't want to set up a new machine, you could also get a shell account from an ISP and use telnet or SSH to access it. I know CGI101 www.cgi101.com offers shell accounts on a Linux box and I know there are many more. You should be able to get a shell account for $15/month or less.
But also keep in mind that most Linux and Unix exams require that you know how to install the operating system. You are still better off setting up your own box, but the shell account could be a short term solution.

| I have PC with win 98 . can i make partition and install redhat linux ? And if i can will there be any problem with my win 98 ? | |

There shouldn't be a problem, but just in case keep a Windows boot disk around. If anything happens it's usually something to do with the mbr in which case you can just run "fdisk /mbr". Also make a LILO boot disk during installation (you'll be given that option). Be sure to install Linux after Windows is already installed since Linux's boot managers usually give you the option to go into Windows, but Microsoft's boot manager only gives different Microsoft OSs as options. | |

| http://www.cyberspace.org offers *free* shell accounts on solaris, a good book to check out would be "Running Linux" by O'Reilley Press .. and of course the plethora of linux sites, check out google's linux search http://www.google.com/linux .. good luck ..

| 1 more question can i download red hat linux os from http://linuxiso.org/redhat.html ? If yes then i should download it to my hard disk and then run setup from there right ? and which redhat should i download bcoz there are many over there . Please just have a look on that website and tell me bcoz they are saying disc 1 disc 2 ........ i am confused a bit | |

| download the first 2, they just have older versions there as well, you want Disc1, and Disc2 of RH7.2 .. those are ISO's, you will need to burn them onto a cd, if ur using ezcd creator, you can just double click them, or open them with ezcd and it will start burning them, i think the same goes with nero, the instructions are on the site, once u burn them, bootup with Disc1, and then youre on your way, good luck ..
