This Jan I’m starting a semester long class on UNIX with heavy emphasis on Linux-Red Hat. I’m a brand newbie to UNIX/Linux. I wanted to gain some knowledge of Solaris too. How much will Solaris differ for RH?

There are many differences. However at the core is unix so.........

.Learing RH will enable you to pick Solaris. Now granted I dont know a whole lot about solaris...From my dabblings the configs are in different place, naming etc

A former regular here posted this link

You can get a free shell account on a solaris box.Take a look.It will help.

And of course hang out with us a little

The main differences between Linux and Solaris have to do with how things are organized. Most of the commands are the same. Solaris's support for x86 hardware is very limited, but on a Sparc it's great. Once you learn one the other should come easily. Between the two I would suggest starting out with RedHat.
