I am trying to install RH 7.2 on top of Win2k but during the installation it prompts me an error" not enough RAM to install" just in the beginning of the installation.

Any help will be appreciated.

How much RAM do you have? As long as you have at least 64MB there shouldn't be a problem. If you have less then that, try using the text based install and don't try loading KDE or Gnome.

I have 128 Mb of RAM. I am trying to dual boot it on top of Win2k. I also tried the text based installion but still the same problem. I also swap the memmory on each slot but still the same. But the wierd thing is when I try to dual boot it on Win98, Win95 OS with the same RAM 128 Mb i dont encounter any problem. isn't it that Win2k is not allowing OS to be on its side....

128 MB should be enough to install ...
I have Win2K, Suse and NetBSD running on my home PC with 256+128 RAM (for my Oracle database) without any troubles. W2K shouldn't be problem - I updated from W98 to Win2K recently and it didn't even bother the boot loader - the first time I was positively surprised about M$

What is the exact error msg? Any hints on this behaviour on the RH site?

I also knew that RH can be installed on a minimum of 4MB with the minimium requirements only. That is why I am confused coz I already have 128 MB of RAM and it is prompting me an error related to memory...wooooohhh

I tried using graphical installation first then after the booting initialize "bang" it is promptin me " Red Hat not enough RAM to install" then when I press ok it terminates the installation. After this text based installation. Ok i will try replacing the RAM eventhough the previous RAM is working and I will inform you.

thanks.

That's a good idea. *nix is a lot more picky about bad memory then Windows is, so that may be your problem. Do you get a lot of blue screens (more then what's normal) with Windows? A while ago one of my friends had a bad memory stick in his PC and it was causing lots of Windows blue screens, and Linux wouldn't load because of it.

If you have two different memory sticks try loading Linux with just one or the other to see if this is the source of the problem.

Actually, I have no experience of BLUE SCREEN with Win2k. I will keep you inform tomorrow with the suggestion I made.

thanks.

at what point do you get this error in the installation, how big are u making ur /boot and SWAP partitions? or are u jus making / and SWAP ? .. hm .. i wonder if you may have a bad image, but thats a weird problem to result from a bad image though .. jus some ideas ..

i cant find any problems similar to this, i would try some new media, because your memory sounds fine, and it happens before the install, try resetting ur cmos to defaults, then try to install it again, if same happens, jus try some new media, and if you arent having hardware issues, it should work, good luck ..

Hi,

thanks for the time. What I will be doing is try to install it on another PC with Win2k on top if the error will occur. I am suspecting that RH does not support the COMPAQ 2500 proliant Server memory but this is still vague at the mean time. I will inform you guys for any developments.

thanks a lot.

nope it definitely supports it

i really think, you are either having a hardware failure or bad media, but mostly i think its bad media .. good luck ..

thanks mate. I've been to the link but when I click the "X" it seems that there is no report on my server but the rest have reports. Only COMPAQ Proliant 2500 doesn't have link. I told you I am suspecting it.
