Hello, I am going to let you know off the bat that I don't know anything at all about linux but am learning. The question that I have is that I have Mandrake 8.1 loaded on my PC and when I first installed the OS it asked me what kind of desktop I would like? I picked the Gnome over KDE, so far everything is fine. So now I am in playing, and explorering linux. Next day I start it up and it brings me to the KDE desktop, now I cannot get the Gnome Desktop to load. Ok I know I sound like a moron because I don't know linux but please help

Did you recently install KDE or edit some of your config files? That could have caused this. When you type "startx", the .xinitrc file in your home directory (usually /root if you're logged in as root or /home/username otherwise) is examined. I've pasted in what this file would look like in FreeBSD in order to start Gnome. I'm not sure that it's the exact same syntax as Mandrake though, so backup this file before modifying it. Here it is:

exec gnome-session

I would look at the X server files.Im not familar with Drake...but X11 conf has parameters that could potentially resolve this issue.

As my friend said make your backup.Wait a minute he said he wanted to learn.....

Nah, if you really want to learn try:
rm /etc/fstab

then reboot
