Hey guys,
I need some guidance here... I have to take a Linux Certification for work ASAP. There are 3 out there that I can choose from to become an IBM Eserver XSeries Certified Expert... One is the RHCE, the other is SAIR, the third is LPI Level 1. My problem is that I need to get one of them done as fast as possible. What makes me think about LPI is that there are only 2 tests, SAIR also seems Do-able relatively quickly as well. The RHCE obviously has alot of hand on type stuff, which would not be a problem with the lab I have access to at work, (except for the cost factor and it is vendor specific) Has anyone done these certs, and how long study time did you put into these. I am a relatively fast learner, and every day I change my mind on which one to do. I guess I am looking to which one that I can get done the quickest, but at the same time will help me further my career the most.... any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Rob

If you want to get this done ASAP forget about RHCE. It's a really in depth lab exam. LPI and Sair would both be good choices. I'm not sure which would be more difficult. I recommend going with LPI though since from what I can tell it's better known the Sair and there's more material available for it.

Btw, do you have a link to info on that IBM cert? It sounds interesting.

Thanks for the info... I was kind of thinking the same thing. From the reviews that I am reading on the Sair books, they seem to follow the exams... As far as the ibm certification goes, the site is www.ibm.com/certify and they have a bunch of different certifications. I am taking the one for the E-server certified specialist, Xseries. It deals with their intel based servers. It is alot of product knowledge, but I work with them every day. As far as the expert level goes, there is another exam you have to take, as well as show proof of one of the linux certifications. There is free training on www.pc.ibm.com/training you can log in as a customer, get a user name and password, and take some great free courses. Thanks again for your help.

What about CompTIA's new Linux+??

That exam is quick and easy
by the sounds of it.

It probably would be easier, but I don't think IBM accepts it.

Correct,
IBM only takes RHCE, LPI Level 1, or SAIR LCA. I am looking at doing the LPI because it is only 2 tests, and I think I can get it done the quickest, although red-hat does sound tempting, and I have equipment that I can work on hands on, I will decide which one I am going to do after taking the IBM exam tomorrow... Thanks again for all your input guys!

Good luck on the exam. I know what you mean about RHCE being tempting. It's the only Linux/Unix exam that I'm interested in taking because it's so difficult.

They don't accept it???
But IBM is a CompTIA supporter
and member........

That is kind of stupid eh........

It's probably either because Linux+ is considered very easy or because it's new. I'm sure if this were a more established and difficult exam IBM would accept it.

I am guessing that IBM doesn't accept this certification because the certification that they are offering is a Netfinity Server Expert, Specializing in Linux. I think that the key term is Expert. They just selected the 3 other certifications because they are more advanced like someone else said in another post...

There are no fast track on Linux certification. It is all up to your knowledge and technical skill on the system.

SAIR might be the easier, but I don't see your point why you take the certification when you don't have time to study.

REMEMBER:
Certification to help you increase your technical skill.

Amen to that certs help increase your technical skill, especially if you are working directly with the product. Studying for this IBM test has helped me IMMENSELY at my job as far as knowledge and effectiveness goes, and as far as the Linux Certifications Kasor, you think Sair might be easier than LPI? I am looking at the amount of exams, as well as the amount of hands on, and the difficulty of the exams. I just dont really have the 700 bones to fork over for the RHCE right now, but I need to get one done quick. I have a pretty sweet lab to practice hands on as much as I want, (4 IBM servers, 3 which have hot swap hard drives, all of them SCSI, one with a raid card, 2 IBM workstations, and a fibre channel storage device) Basically, for my company to get level 2 support for IBM, we need to have X amount of server specialists, and experts, and what not, I just need to get the linux certification as fast as possible. Over the next month or so, I have to install Red Hat 6 and 7, SUSE, Caldera, Turbolinux, and SCO Openserver on all of these servers, and then teach everyone else how to do it. After I am comfortable with that, I have set up a network, and a cluster with these things, and do the same thing. Hopefully all that while studying will help me get ready for the test.... Thanks for the continuing feedback guys!
