Hey guys,
I want to install Linux on my gateway laptop, and I have been to the sites about installing linux on laptops, but I am still too uncomfortable to use FIPS, and I dont want to trash my hard drive. I was looking at 2 programs, one is called VMware, which lets you run linux on windows, or vice versa, at the same time, which would be great for me to get more comfortable with linux. I also saw Linux for Windows, which supposedly lets you dual boot, but installs linux in a windows file or something like that. Have any of you guys had experience with either of these programs? Here is the url for vmware.... www.vmware.com I am not sure about the Linux for windows url. Any info would be great. I want to get this on my computer ASAP! Thanks!

Depending on if you are using Windows 95, 98, 98SE, or ME(???) try WinLinux 2000
http://www.winlinux.net/

You can also look at DragonLinux
http://www.dragonlinux.org/

Depending on your specs, I personally wouldn't try VMware on a laptop. Personally, if you can afford it, I suggest putting Linux on an old desktop computer by itself. Therefore, you can learn linux without holding it back by multibooting.

Try Caldera's e-Desktop. It installs as eay as Windows and comes with a scaled-down version of Partition Magic to do the paritioning for you. FIPS is for people who really know what they are doing. The only prob with the e-Desktop is that when it comes to choosing a partition size for the Linux, you are given a choice of 300 MB (too small to do anything with), 750 MB (still kind of small) or maximum (leaving only 100 MB left for the other OS to work in). But apart from that, it's great for a beginner. Can get the distribution for like 30 bucks from Amazon or Caldera Systems.
