laloca,
I don't know maybe it's lack of focus. Are you currently working as a dba? I work as an oracle developer(started in august) using forms6i. I already have a b.s in c.s, but would like to get atleast one cert under my belt. Is it worth it to pursue the developer cert or go after the dba cert. How do you see the future for new dba's?

hi,

no I'm not a dba, I'm a Consultant.

Don't overestimate the value of certs - it's a common mistake you don't get a job only with a cert. I made it because it was a chance to learn much more about Oracle than you normally need in your job. You get quite a good overview about the technology behind and about most of the features. It helps me a lot in my job - not because of the "deep" knowledge I gained, but because I know where to start searching

Regarding developer or dba: do you like Forms6i programming? If so the developer path would be the best for you (Oracle desupports Forms 6i by the end of 2004 - IAS, Java and XML are hot actually).

A DBA job is quite different - normally it's done by system administrators beside networking, O/S maintenance, backups etc.

Only few companies need full time DBAs - and those are well experienced people (so no chance for beginners). But with a second specialization and some experience eg. as developer or system admin a dba exam could be the extra plus.

With 6+ months Forms experience the sql-exam will be easy for you. I don't know how good your PL/SQL is, but check out exception handling and variable scopes.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I like working with forms, but The company I work for is think about switching over to java. I'm not sure if
that cert would do me any good. I'm also interested in networking, so that's how I came up with dba, because from what I have heard you need to understand some networking along with understanding how oracle works.

hi again,

yes networking knowledge is useful to understand how oracle connections work

It's unfortunately only a small part of both oracle and networking - I actually tried for 3 days to get this XML-XSQL-thing running on my home computer! Without success - I'm so tired about this!

I wish you the very best for your exams!
