Author I need some advice Re: Oracle job

Hi. I need some advice, please...
I live in Paris (France), under 30.

I got the Oracle OCP 8i cert (DBA), I sent some
resumes and finally I got a call from a recruiter.
(I have (real) uni background, etc.)

Problem:

tiny lies on my resume (yes I know, this sucks, etc.
but I really need a job), tiny lies basically about
experience, they said "2yr oracle experience required",
and I don't have 2yr oracle experience. A friend of mine
is ready to answer the phone and be my (fake) boss (while
working on his real company, real phone number, etc.)
and talk (lies) about my (fake) oracle admin experience...
well, FAKE REFERENCES. I don't like that but I think it
could work. I don't work for his company but, well,
my Oracle cert is 100% real, I know my Oracle stuff
(DBA stuff) and I need "a chance". What's your opinion?

Thanks
John

Hi John,

IMHO this isn't a good idea - it's cheating!

I don't know your background, but how well do you know your Oracle stuff?

Have you ever made real backups (handling with real tapes/libraries), have you ever recovered a crashed database during "rush hours" when every minute counts? Do you know how to start the Oracle server services/ processes on different platforms? Do you know the Enterprise Manager in and out? Are you able to install/configure Oracle clients and SQL*Net on different platforms? Do you know what Metalink is?

I know you learned a lot of stuff for the exams .. but practise is absolutely different!

This sounds quite harsh, but how will you feel if your new boss will ask you about your real experience if you fail after a week or two? You'll be dismissed immediately!!

Actually it's very hard to get a job without any experience. Your faked experience wont help. There will be tons of applications of really experienced (5+ years) DBAs urgently looking for a job ... And don't forget the interview where you could be faced with tough practise questions.

It was (and is) a bad idea and a waste of time to go for the DBA-exams without any practise. I never heard that someone with only an exam (braindumped or not) got a dba position.

An advice: try to find a job as an Oracle developer, gain additional Java skills (PL/SQL is not enough). Oracle Application Server is hot actually! A DBA job (if you really want it) will come after some years.

And don't miss to upgrade to 9i !

While, that's a way of getting a job. But, it's still up to the person.

If the person is so confident to hold a DBA job, go for it. Make sure, he know the stuffs in and out.

I have no objection on this matter. Actually, i am also one of them. Example, few year ago, i have no experience on NT Server. But, i have read tons and tons and tons of books on NT Server. Covering all aspects of NT Server. Install it, crush it, do all sorts of funny things on the server. I can say, i really know it well.

When, i go for interview, i told the employer, i know NT and have experience on it from my previous company. But, in fact, i dun have any experience.

In the end, i got the job and work very well on it. But, that's few years ago. Almost now and then, i keep picking up new skills on network, database( Oracle, MS SQL ), Solaris unix and others.

I never wish to discourage ppl. Go by all means, if you are good and confident to handle the Oracle DB.

Hopefully, the size of the database dun scare you.

Good luck in your job finding.

Hi Dann and laloca:

I have to agree and disagree with your guys. Oracle is not same as NT. Most of the MS products are menu driven on GUI and it is easy to find something quick. Oracle is not like that especially on UNIX. I totally agree with lalcoca. But if he needs experience as a DBA, the best thing he can join in a big company as a junior DBA with a group of experienced DBA. Then he can can pick up real world experience from them. I certified for MS, Oracle and Netware and it is hard to get experience without starting from junior level and reading lot of books as Dann said.

Thanks
