031 First try experience

| I appeared for 031 exam today, I just missed the target by 2 questions (my score was 42 out of 60). I am trying to analyze that went wrong..... some of the questions were based on the "real" hands-on experience. The questions were trickier, not as straight as 007. I think I was little over confident after passing 007 with good score. For example one question was: what oracle error message appears... there was a list of 7 errors to choose from. So many questions were selecting 4 answers out of 5, or 3 out of 5.
I studied only one book (Sybex), around 30% (aprox) of questions I dont think I find answer in that book. Some questions were to test your "in-depth" knowledge on the topic. For example one question was to select an answer which has all logical components, there were 4 answers, each listing 3-5 entities . e.g. A. tablespace, database, datafile, segment B. segment, extenst, datafile... You need to be patient and need good concentration to answer, there are chances of missing even if you know the answer. Another question was, while renaming control file, you give wrong path in ALTER command. so what sequence of operations is needed to correct the problem.....
I solved STS, practice questions from Jason S. Couchman book, all questions from Sybex book, no one has given samples of the type of questions I have explained in the above paragraph. I am not sure if everything is covered in any single book, I suggest to those who are planning to take this exam, to refer oracle Administration Guide, SQL reference and other related manuals from Oracle along with the certification book. And very important thing practice hands-on as much as possible and try to make mistakes and see what happens, especially those who are new to oracle and those who are not full time DBAs(like me :-) ). Becaz in my opinion just getting certification with passing target wont serve the purpose of obtaining certification.
Hope I didnt scare some of you, I just wanted to share my experience, if it can help others. But one thing you need to take serious, it's not just certification, it is "Upgraded" Certification program now :-). For more details visit oracle site:

| Dear xxx,
Your notes are very useful especially for me – I am about to take 031.
It looks like Oracle has changed the rules again. – no division one ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’ part of this test. But your 42 instead of 44 not bad at all!
Is there were any simulators? Like sqlplus or OEM.
Is there are a lot about logminer, globalization?
I do my study on TBT CD-pack – it’s expensive but supposed to be useful. So you fell there are no real connection between STS and real exam – is it right?
It’d nice to hear more your comments
Regards

| Lot of questions appear in exam are scenario based. e.g. You want to expand your database to Asian, European users, what change you make to char set, parameters on client/server etc.
Expect some not so easy questions on data dictionary views. Most of the quesions were NOT based on just one view, like what sts and other books questions. Some answers contained 2/3 view names (again questions were scenario based). practice exams in Jason S. Couchman book cover lot of scenario based questions.
The pfile, spfile names and in what (file name) order oracle looks while startup is a important topic.
Another example is : while redo log file is filled (in archive log mode) when oracle considers reusing it: answers : after data files are backed up, after redo log file is backed up etc etc... when it comes to choosing 4 out of 7, 2-3 close answers, it is real test...
There will be some easy questions and some "hard" ones, only thing you dont know on what topic you are going to get hard ones, so it is good idea to study topic in depth to the level possible. sts and certification books help to answer easy ones, but for hard ones require more in depth knowledge. there were not many questions on tools (OEM etc), globalization (just one) for me, Logminer is not a 031 topic, but redo log files management is imp.
Hope these comments help. Good luck for your exam!! | |
