Hello, I would really like input.....a cry for help if you will.......
Well, I am one exam away from being Oracle 8i Certified. My concern at this point is getting a job after I am certified. My question is what would compliment the Oracle 8i cert. I do not believe that I will obtain a position in Oracle lacking real world experience. I am smart and willing to do whatever it takes to prove my worth but from the job boards, my attitude is not going to get me very far. I would love to get in the job market right now and start gaining experience but I am feeling that just the Oracle cert alone is not going to do it for me. I do have a friend that is a consultant but his take on my question is that I should not pursue a lot of certs because it is not good to be a jack of all trades but master of none. Well, I am not so sure I believe that now. My thought is after my final Oracle exam which is on Monday, I need to take the Comptia N+ exam (which I am also prepared for) then I should do the Microsoft DBA side. I really do not have anyone else to point me in the right direction. All I know is I need to continue on my path but I just would like your input as to my idea stated above. Sorry to ramble but I am just so frustrated!! Thanks in advance for any ideas that you may have for me.

Finishing 8i cert and getting a junior oracle dba seems to be the logical choice.
I know it is easier said than done. Focusing
your energy on the area that is most likely
to generate results, in your case, it seems to be oracle. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I think my frustration lies in my geographical location. I live in an area that really does not have a lot of job opportunities. I am from Michigan originally and will probably relocate back there at the end of the summer. Thanks again!

I think I can understand what you are going through. You haven't mentioned if you are currently a student or are employed. Either way I think the best way to gain expertise in this field is to keep reading a lot of books and try to apply them in your everyday life. Whenever you come across any problem in a school or work project, try to ask yourself a question - As an Oracle DBA can I improve this process or make the application work better.

Another good idea would be to keep frequenting all those DBA forums out there and try to answers those questions by searching through your own books and notes. This would simulate real world experience for you. In short you can learn a lot from others' experience. As far as finding jobs is concerned, I guess my advise would be 'Be patient and keep working hard'
