Oracle Certifications 8i or 9i

| Hi everybody,
Just want some feedback on the following:
Since 9i DBA certification consists of only 4 exams whereas 8i DBA certification consists of 5, doesn't it make more sense financially to go for the 9i certification instead of the 8i certification?
Thanks for any reply,

| Actually, if you start with 8i and go to 9i, it is six exams (the five for 8i and the one for the 9i upgrade). Plus, you have **two** certifications, thereby showing the world you are the next best thing to sliced bread as far as DBA's go. There are still people using 7.x, so I imagine 8i will be around for a while (planned desupport dates have been announced by Oracle for the 8i series).
The 8i exams are a known entity. The 9i exams are new and unknown. If you are looking for study aids, 8i has much more to offer. Look at eBay - books, Sybex OCP series, STS (which are very good) - these items are all over the place.
The Oracle Press books for 9i (New Features, and New Features exam guide) kinda-sorta miss the mark, so if you are relying on those for the upgrade, good luck, because you will surely need it.
Great books for 8i: DBA Bible by Gennick, Sybex OCP series (three books, the one with Backup and Recovery is a bit weak), and administrator's reference you can get from Oracle Technology Network (membership is free). |
