Hi all, I just have some questions about Oracle certification (8i), your response is greatly appreciated.

- What is the first exam I should start with? Introduction to Oracle: SQL and PL/SQL (1ZO-001)?
- Is this exam hard? How long did it take you to prepare for the test?
- What is the best way to prepare for the exam and can you recommend me a good study material?

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm doing my 8i DBA track at the moment and I'd definately recommend taking the exams in the order that Oracle lists them as they tend to refer to earlier subjects in some exams. Definately start with PL/SQL in my opinion, especially if you have no experience with SQL.

As for study material, I'm using the Sybex DBA kit (3 books) and some computer based training along with self test software www.selftestsoftware.com.

I've also got Oracle 8i personal edition running on Windows which allows me to mess around with the software and is pretty much essential if you don't just want to pass 'on paper'.

So far I've passed 3 out of 3 and with a bit of luck will be certified within the next few weeks.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your input. I have one more question. I have most of study materials for 8i version, but since the 9i just came out, is there any difference in taking either one? Isn't it better to go for the current version?

Thanks.

Yeah it might be better to go for the 9i cert. I've heard rumours that Oracle will retire 8i certs at the end of this year but haven't seen anything oficial yet.

I started in November and at the time, there were only 2 9i beta exams available so I went with 8i.

One advantage of taking 8i is that there is alot more training info around and it only takes one exam to upgrade from 8i to 9i so maybe it would be worth you doing the 8i cert and then upgrading to 9i.

just a thought. Its a tough decision.

I am not sure about 8i retiring by the end of the year. But i would think just go for the 8i cert and then upgrade to 9i, since there probably will be a lot of material available for the upgrade exam also. Also 8i is still a lot more common than 9i, so i guess 8i would be a safe bet.

Cheers!
