Well I was going to start studying for the Oracle9i New features exam, but there is just nothing out there to help me study for it. The books are just starting to now come out. I am waiting for the OCP oracle9i database: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide book to come out in March and then I guess I will try again.
If anyone has any information e-mail me at

Hi Melissa,

I plan the upgrade exam too - but actually I'm trying to finish the 8i track until end of March.

What about a 9i upgrade-learning-group? 400 new features need to be shared! ;-)

We could start in April where (hopefully) more materials are around. I heard the Exam Guide Book (Couchman?) isn't that good.

Unfortuniately I can't wait until april to write. I have to write it for work, and need to have it written and passed by mid April.
I am going to do a different exam now, and just put this one off until mid March.
thanks anyway.

Melissa, check this out:
Oracle9i Database: New Features For Administrators OCP Exam Articles
http://www.oracle-base.com/Articles/9i/Articles9i.asp
I haven't read them yet but I plan to, I heard they're very good.
I'm also reading "Oracle Essentials" (O'Reilly) and it covers most 9i features, it's supposed to be a great book.

Good luck

Hi Melissa and Heloisad!

I found a very good link - Howard J. Rogers is a "famous" Oracle trainer and guru providing 9i update materials on his website:

http://www.hjrdba.com/books/9inf.pdf

not finished yet - but will be soon!

PS: Heloisad: a learning group would be great!

Laloca,

Are you talking about the "OCP Oracle9i Database: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide by Jason Couchman, Daniel K. Benjamin" book? How come if it hasn't been published yet? Where did you hear that it isn't a good book?

Hey... and I've checked that link for the hjrdba.com and it's great! I already had it in my favorites (mess) but had never checked it. Thanks for the reminder!

Heloisad,

check the Oracle newsgroups - I read that both the courseware and the books contain "some" mistakes - that maybe become corrected before beeing published.

for example: they still "teach" you, that you can't use "order by" when creating a view. Can you remember that from your 8i SQL-exam? I had this question. I answered correctly with NO - but you CAN order a view. A very useful feature IMHO. It's sick: they didn't even change this in the 9i track.

I always bought IT books - many times if I needed information about a special feature I went to the bookstore and if I found a book covering that feature in the expected detail, I bought it. But apart from the topic I was looking for I mostly not even read the table of contents.

When I started to learn for OCP I again bought a book (exam guide from couchman). But from the beginning I found that the book doesn't cover everything I need to understand the topic entirely. So I started to gather additional information from the internet. While preparing for A&A I realized that I use the book only as a guideline what I need to prepare for (and that the chapters are the same as in the official exam guide from Oracle). So I put the book back to the bookshelf - looks very nice there ;-)

In the meantime I found many useful Oracle sources in the internet and if I still can't understand something entirely I search/post in newsgroups. And I invested my budget for books in additional memory and a laserprinter

The only bad thing is: I don't know the "correct" answers to mistakes in the courseware/exam books ....
