Okay, I'm finally convinced Oracle is the way to go so I am considering doing the Oracle 8i certification but have no practising environment. Would you suggest I enrol in one of the training centers providing Oracle certifications or do a self study from home? If you think training centers, do you have any recommendations? Has anyone heard of Silicon Valley CLC?

Just some b/g about me, I have a lot of database experience but no Oracle and I really do want to get a job as an Oracle DBA after these certifications.

Thanks for your help.

Hi dunamis,

hard question - it mostly depends on your preferences in learning.

IMHO a training center is more efficient especially for beginners but much more expensive. You have the chance to ask your trainer and/or discuss with your colleagues interesting topics. I guess its much more fun to solve problems in a group ... but if there are some "weak" people in a group it could also become very boring.

I prefer studying at home because my job doesn't allow a regular course schedule. You don't need a particular practising environment - I use my 433 MHz Celeron PC with 396 MB RAM and Win2000 and downloaded Oracle Enterprise Ed. from technet.oracle.com. But it takes muuuuuch longer to prepare, because I'm always stuck at examnotes instead of learning In other words: it depends on your discipline.

If you have a lot of database experience and want to save the money for a training center I'm sure you can self study at home. There are many excellent sources and helpful people in the internet and of course here.

Welcome!

I'd say just study at home. Of course the number one requirement is discipline. And good material.

I don't think it's worth paying all that money to learn, the effort will have to come from you anyway.

And specially if you already have some knowledge about databases, that should make things easier. I didn't have ANY experience or knowledge about anything related to Oracle or computers (I'm changing careers) and I just got certified, never took any classes: just book, notes, STS, documentation, and some hands-on at home.

Good luck!
