Need advice from experienced DBA

| Hi.
I'm 29 years old and I'm Brazilian, with a 5-year Law degree and 5 years of experience in Law (from Brazil); no computer-related experience whatsoever: now I’m changing careers...
So far I have passed 4 out of the 5 exams of the Oracle8i OCP/DBA path; I haven’t been working since I moved to the US (past 14 months), except for some part-time nanny job.
What should I do now? I would like to know what kind of work I should look for, and what kind of pay – if any – I should expect.
So, please, somebody tell me: HOW will I ever get work experience if I hear people don't get hired *because* of their lack of experience?
Thank you, | |

| Hello,
Congratulations!
You passed in four of the five Oracle exams.
In your case, I think that you look for positions like junior DBA.
You have to think, that the most important thing to do now is get experience.
In Brazil you could get a position like "estagiário", to get experience in IT Job.
Next month I will begin to study for Oracle exams. What do you think about the tests? Is very difficult?
How many months do you study? | |

I've been using the OCP Oracle8i DBA Study Guides from SYBEX: 3 books cover 5 exams.
I also have STS (Self Test Software), it's REALLY helpful too, even though it's kind of expensive, but definitely worth it. (Each is 100 dollars with 300 questions).
Other than that, I get some free demo tests and notes on the net from sites like oraclenotes, cramsession, contemporary technologies… Since all these materials -including the books and the STS - have some typos and sometimes wrong/conflicting information, I always check the official Oracle documentation for the topics where I need more in depth info. And I have Oracle installed in my computer too, so I can type the examples.
I even have some notes I typed (for the last exam - Performance Tuning), if you want it I can email it to you.
And a lot of time and discipline to study… I started studying 5 months ago, but I've been studying a lot, since I've never even heard of Oracle before then.
No, I don't think the tests are too hard, I was actually expecting it to be harder; my scores are not bad (except for the 3rd exam), considering everything is so new to me:
Exam 1 = 51/57
Exam 2 = 61/64
Exam 3 = 48/60
Exam 4 = 55/57
I want to start as a Junior DBA, but even so I think it will be very hard to find a job, I would be willing to work for a very little pay, but still I don't know if they would want to give me a chance.
Take care, | |

| Great scores! congratulations.
Regarding a job, have you considered working for free or internships? like about six months? its really hard to find a jr dba job without any experience especially if you not a graduate of CS/IT/MIS. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices and gamble a bit to get a break.
Good luck on your job hunting.
Regards,
Luke

Yes, I'm willing to do anything, even work for free... but I don't think I'm ready to start looking for a job yet...
Yesterday I passed the last exam for the 8i DBA path!!! But I need some hands-on experience first so I feel more comfortable to start posting my resume.
Thanks for the reply! |
