I'm new to Unix, anyone with suggestions as to how much Unix could be required for the DBA tasks?

I think MySQL is the Database that runs on Linux. You could download linux and MySQL and get a feel for command line database administration....Just a thought.

There is a good book on the market :

Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference By Donald K. Burleson

I have it found it useful for most DBA tasks. Also it is very cheap.
