| I am new (VERY new) to Oracle, and I have downloaded the 8i Enterprise Edition from Oracle and installed it to play around with a bit to get a feel for the whole shabang, however, how different is 8i and 9i, and would I be wasting my time if I started with 8i instead of 9i?
As far as certification go I am planning to take the 9i track (for obvious reasons), but I figured that because I know just about zip about Oracle it might be better starting with the bit older stuff, and then moving on. Is this a waste of time? Am I making a mistake doing this?

| Hi bass2k1,
IMO it is still preferable to follow the 8i track:
* there are much more materials around (books, exam crams etc.)
* also many people here or on other sites are preparing for the 8i exams - we can share our experiences
* 9i is still experimental - only very few companies already use it for production - why should a company migrate a running system which is still supported by Oracle)? So most of the Oracle jobs base on 8i.
* The 9i certification has only 4 exams, but this does not mean it will be easier.
I will finish the 8i track first and upgrade to 9i next summer - so I'll have both certs 8i and 9i - sounds much better IMO...

| Well, that actually makes pretty good sense. I don't know when I will be sitting my first exam, becauseI think I will need a while to get to grips with Oracle, so to speak, but I am planning to do it around February next year.
Like I said, I have no experience what so ever regarding Oracle. Would I be going in over my head thinking I could pull of an exam from what I learn in books and the "hands-on" I get from my home lab?

| I just don't want to start the 8i track and then half way I need to worry about upgrading to 9i as it will be retired. What are the chances of 8i becoming retired within the next 6-8 months? | |
| laloca 2001-12-30, 4:34 pm |
| If you are once certified for an Oracle version it will not retire like M$ exams. 8i will be actual at least 1 or 2 years. Next March Oracle will retire the Oracle8 track. There are no news when the 8i track will retire (only the exam track retires not the certification).
I don't know your job market but I guess it is very hard to get an appropriate job only with an exam and without any job experience.
Start with the SQL/PL-SQL exam (you will need it anyway). Try to find a database related job after your first exam. Ask the HR people during the interview what exam track you should follow. Maybe you get a junior DBA position or at least a feeling what skills they are looking for. Only an idea ...

| Hi guys,
there's difference between version 8 and version 8i?
getting certified in 8i, does that mean, you know how to admin a version 8 oracle?
If i not mistaken, in my country, quite number of the companies are still using version 8, instead of 8i.
That's the problem , i am facing, i am also not sure, whenther should i go for 8i...
Even, you have the concept in admin oracle, what's the feature, is totally different, will you have a hard time in it?
Not like MS SQL, version 7 and 2000, not much different, same interface, except 2000 provide XML support.
Does, anyone in this forum, know, what's the market for 8i? Unless, is fresh installation of database system, otherwise, why, would a company running older version oracle upgrade their database to the latest. As you all know, oracle license and all the stuffs are costly.
Just like NT 4,is holding a lot of percent of share in the current market. If you told me 8i is like NT 4, holding the same value, i definately will go for it.
So, whenther should we go for 8i or dun go for oracle certs at all.
Thanks for your advice.

| Hi Dann,
I know Oracle up from 6.0.34.... and the basics are still the same Every Oracle release offers special features due to marketing or market needs.
I guess you have to go for at least 8i, because Oracle will end certification for Oracle8 in March 2002.
Oracle Release 8.0.x has the following
desupport End Dates:
Error Correction Support (ECS): 30-JUN-2000
Extended Assistance Support (EAS): 30-JUN-2003
In the next months many companies will think about upgrading to 8i or 9i (I guess some of them will wait until version 9.1.3 or higher is available). We upgraded our production from 7.3.4 to 8.1.7 last month - because we switched to a new box (not because of new features). Everything works still the same ..
An 8i certification will always help you in the job market and you can always upgrade to 9i with only one exam (you are certified for 8i AND 9i then).
I use the DBA Certification Exam Guide from Jason Couchman which covers releases 7.x, 8.x and 8i (special features for 8i are marked. But there are many other good sources available (Sybex, ILT etc.).
Good luck for your exams,
