Hi,
Does anyone have any observations about the current strength of the Job market for OCPS and Oracle DBA's in general ?
Is the current slowdown hurting us more or less than other IT fields ?
Any success or horror stories appreciated particularly from recent DBA OCPS.
Thanks

i got mixed signals from a whole lot of sources. I first called about 20 headhunters regarding the same question you just asked. Most of them said there are just as many opportunities for DBA's as there are for networking professionals and programmers. I spoke to several global banking firms and they said E-Commerce Development is the hottest field right now. Since you MUST know java if you want to be an oracle dba, some actual HR management guys told me I'd probaly be coding for them instead of doing DBA work. THen again 10 headhunters told me you dont have to know java if you want to be an oracle dba, but you have to know UNIX. go figure.

as far as the horror stories out there, as some HR managers told me, the more you know, thefurther youll go. THe guys getting laid off right now are the ones who dont have a lot of skills. The guys who go all out to learn various skills are the ones who dont get laid off.

FOr oracle DBA, you should know the following:

OCP DBA cert
OCP DBO cert
Familiarity with Oracle Forms and Reports
Data mining
Data warehousing
Migration From Microsoft SQL server
JAVA 2, JFC, EJB (Query beans), JDBC, XML
ODBC
Data modeling and all fundamental aspects of RDBMS.
UNIX and LINUX, Windows 2000 and NT
an MCSE wouldnt hurt either.

Are you serious about the MCSE stuff? I'm in a Master's program right now, and my plan is to take the corresponding cert exams for some of the oracle/programming classes, but I have been ignoring the thought of taking exams for MCSE (although we are studying NT, not 2000)

Anyone else experience better luck with having some MCSE exams under their belt?

Thanks :-)

MCSE isnt really neccessary, but if you want to show your employer you have extra skills in network administration, the mcse is your best bet. a dba has to have a solid grip on Network administration as part of his job.
anyway, see the post entitled "dba is a tough job" for more detailed requirements to be a dba. Its more programming sided than anything else.

Thanks,

I have seen your posting about working as a DBA! I love programming, so I am definitely working towards the Oracle Developer track, but I am still leaning towards MCSD, will try to just get both. I love the new .NET stuff

Thanks again for your insight.

In Los Angeles at least, Oracle is pretty much a requirement on 90% of the jobs posted. And right alongside that is usually an MCSE. They want multi-talented people these days.
