Trying to start new career in Oracle DBA.
Anyone have any suggestion what books are good for beginner?

I would recommend the Sybex 3 book series. It's a decent study guide and has pretty good ratings on Amazon.com. I bought it and used it to pass my first 4 oracle OCP 8i exams.

I would recommend going to www.amazon.com and see what books are recommended by ACTUAL readers see which ones have the highest STARS(not the Amazon recommends)... and least errata (errors)...

Then go to www.bookpool.com (they are my favorite 40% off... don't worry I don't make any money this referral or work there)... but they are dope... Everything is like 40-50% off... I have a mini barnes and noble on my bookshelf.

Anyways... Get that series... or if you are cheap... just get the first book (intro to SQL and PL/SQL) as I look to my bookshelf... I would also recommend Oracle 8i: DBA practice exams (oracle press) by Jason Couchman and maybe Oracle DBA101 (by oracle press)... and a good desk reference is Oracle 8i: The complete reference (oracle press) and maybe Oracle PL/SQL Programming.

But if you just get the sybex books (study guide)... you will learn a lot ... and will be busy for at least 3 months before you decide to buy more books. The Oracle 8iDBA 101 is a pretty good starter on the tasks of a dba and how the architecture & backups & tuning work... it's like a dummies 101 book.

I'm still unclear. I have little knowledge in database, is this book will help me to get better vision and knowledge?

The Sybex books are for studying for the OCP exam (i.e. study guides geared for passing the exam)

I personally like the second book in the series DBA: Architecture and Admin/Backup Recovery... it gives a good concept of the architecture

But it might be to advanced for a beginner.

Might I suggest Orace DBA 101 by Oracle press... they break that down in non-technical terms (sometimes almost too dumbed down... but great for a beginner)

go buy it at bookpool.com (i'm not affiliated with their site) but they are mad cheap... compare them to bn.com and amazon.com or fatbrain.com it's a no-brainer. Also go to Amazon.com and look at their user ratings on the books. Also people have lists about buying oracle books. Check out the books with the highest stars.. e-mail the list owners and ask for advice...

But buy the books elsewhere... where it's cheaper. I got the entire sybex series from bookpool for 80$ where amazon had it for $120

I overbought books though... I only read the study guides

The SYBEX series is a good one. I did a review of it on Amazon.com, and I highly recommend it. I reason I bought it over Oracle Press Cert book is that the Net 8 section is in print, unlike Oracle Press in which it is only on the CD.

I have also read from other reviewsm, that the B&R sections in the SYBEX book isn't as good as other sources though. I've not completed the B&R exam yet, so I personally can't comment on that.

The Exam Cram series has also got great reviews on Amazon.com, I am chasing the B$R exam cram book by Debbie Wong, although unfortunatly it isn't released until Sep 20, but if it's anything like the 8 version, I'll be buying that.
