It is almost impossible to pass the oracle exams without any oracle experience.

But Oracle is for free (for private/test use only) - you can download the software from www.oracle.com (you need an account - but it's free). Install 8i EE (enterprise ed.) on a Win2000 workstation with some extra RAM and about 1 GB of diskspace - you'll have a fully functional database with all features then.

This forum is full of usefull tips and hints where you can find interesting Oracle materials.

Welcome on board! And good luck studying!

I don't think it is impossible to pass all exams without any experience. I do not have any oracle experience (only SQL Server) and have been able to pass 2 exams.

However not having any practical experience does hurt. For example, I studied my **S off for the first two exams and passed with a little above a passing score. I would suggest utilizing courseware or books that follow the ILT program. After understanding the concepts I would use the LATEST versions of the STSs. The old versions are outdated and the new versions have better references. I here the Cheat sheets are good prep material but I have had trouble getting my hands on them. Most people want $$ for these and will only trade if you buy something they need.
- good luck

Laloca,
Thanks for the information about the free download. I had no idea. If you have any tips on getting started with the 8i test db (exercises, etc.) that will assist in passing exams. Let me know.

aharamp,

ok I'll correct this - maybe it is possible to pass the exams without any experience. If you never installed/started a database, never typed some sql, never saw a real error msg and are forced to handle it ... what will your certification be worth? It's like getting a driving licence without a minute sitting in a car. This must be incredibly boring and tough!

I can't imagine that any employer will give you a job without any real experience - it's hard enough with little experience (< 1 year).

I don't use prepared exercises - I try out anything I read in my materials. We use Oracle at work - this is of course a bonus - but you can't play around with a production server so I also have a database at home. Especially for B/R I really want to crash my database and try to restore it - it's training!! Only reading how it could work is not enough!

I don't use cheets to prepare for my exams. I bought the couchman book and the STS materials. I know this stuff is not cheap, but you can't expect a high level certification for free.

I wish you good luck for your exams! If you have any practise questions - post them here or mail me. I try to help as far as I can...
