What's a good book for learning the Windows Registry and how to change it or hack it? Not just one that's covers any particular Windows but all.

Hey Preacher37,

You are not going to find a single source book that will cover all of Microsoft's Operating Systems for the registry! The registry and the tools between them are slightly different, just think about Windows NT (3.5x & 4.x), Windows 9x (95, 98 & Me), then you have Windows 2000 & Windows XP.

I have four different books on my shelf now from O'Reilly & Que! It is best to be careful and backup your work before making attempts to modify the registry directly - best to use the O/S applets indirectly! Here is a link you can browse for yourself and read what others have to say about these type of books:

Hey Ed,

The "Black Book" series was from Coriolis Group, the then makers of ExamCram, ExamPrep & OnSite series of computer and certification books. They are still available from various bookstores or over the Internet but, who nows for how much longer seeing they are now bankrupt!

Sorry to say that I do not have any relationship to the authors or the company, but I do have a few of their books.

I really like Peter Hipson's Mastering Windows 2000 Registry
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...8187247-9557741

Note that a lot of the stuff covered in this book can also apply to the Win98 and XP registries.

Good Luck!
