| Hello
I am looking for buying a MSCE study quides i can pick up somewhat cheap at cosco, they have the Microsoft 4in1 set MSCE, then there is the SYBEX set of 4 books, and there is the Exam Cram books which are way way skinnier then the rest, and the cost the cheapest too, i don't know what to choose, I am thinking of the Exam Cram series of books, but I am not sure if anyone thinks that these are any good, they are smaller so I could finish reading them over summer and pass all my exams over summer.

| I think it's pretty aggressive thinking to tackle all of the MCSE exams in just a few months with only one reference set. With that said, I don't particularly care for the ExamCram series because of their brevity. These books only prepare you to take a test, not to succeed in a job where your direct troubleshooting techniques are challenged daily. Since the MSCE2K is still so new, I would go with the MS Press training kits. After all, MS wrote the exam Who better to tell you what to expect on it? I haven't looked at the Sybex series, so it would be unfair of me to judge them. Perhaps someone who's using them could help you here.
Also, I would definitely recommend, if you haven't already done so, to obtain a copy of Win2k and start using it. The new test format is more experience and hands-on based.
Good luck in your search and I hope these comments have helped in some way.

| wow they have cosco in russia? they have it here in canada, I was looking at those books too, and thinking of getting some, I dont think you can beet 130 bucks or whatever for 4 books, CAD too, which is a lot cheaper then the US price too. I think they had the M$ ones, and exam crams when I was there, not too sure though, but they where all about 1/3 the price. | |

| hehe, no i am not in russia, i live in canada now, just have it registered there
Pavlov, i do have win2k installed, been using it since it came out
I think i will go with the microsoft books, i think i can finish it all in 2 month no problem, i figure there is like 5000 pages or something, i can read about 500 in 2 days, so thats only 20 days to read the whole thing, and i memorize on the go (i am 17, maybe cuz my brain is still young)
| OmnipotentOne 2001-06-08, 12:34 am |
| wow, thats crazy man, I'm 17 too, but I can read a technical book in a day or two, but I dont memorize it all, I took my A+ and read three books, one in a like 2 days, the other in about 3, and I think the other was a dumbies book that I read in a day, I still took a few notes and had to read up on them.
I wish I had photographic memory.

| well, i went out and got the Microsoft Official Study Guides, figured hell, only costs like 60 buck CAD more then the cram book and you get the microsoft's own stuff. Cosco had an awsome deal, i payed 167 CAD dollars for the whole CORE 4 set, where a computer store price is 286 bucks, cosco saved me 120 bucks, its sweet, gonna start to read my books at the end of this month once school exams are over. Just wondeing, if I pass just the 70-210 exam, does it mean i become MCP or what??, kinda new at this stuff. And do i have to take 7 exams to become MCSE, or just the core 4?
please explain, thanks
| OmnipotentOne 2001-06-10, 2:10 am |
| check out microsofts website, you need the four core, one other core, and two electives, they have a list of them on their site, would post the exact url but they tend to get screwed up on here... plus I'm too lazy to look for it. | |

| If you get signed up with a newsgroup like www.saluki.com you will find that most of us in the industry liked and used Sybex for the Windows NT exams, supplemented with the ExamCram books the week of sitting the exam.
But the opinion of most has changed towards using the Osborne/McGraw-Hill books for the Windows 2000 exams and still using the ExamCram books. That god we don't have to re-certify for XP as well; these books and etcetra sure adds up to a lot of our time and money!! You will most likely want to find another book on the Active Directory seeing the Osborne book does not cover that topic in detail. Checkout www.bookpool.com for a 40+ percent off on most MCSE certification books, screw Amazon or B&N, etc...
As for getting these exams done in two months, I would bet strongly against it! Just looking at your profile and you not having a lot of experience deploying the product, I think this is "wishful thinking" on your behave. I do like your spirit!
Unlike NT days, Microsoft is dead set against having "Paper MCSE's" in the field representing their products.
Just wanted to add my 2 cents here.
| MnMurphy 2001-07-08, 5:15 am |
| As far as MS not wanting paper MCSE's, that' s understandable. But no matter how much I study to pass these tests or how hard I work on my own network, Unless someone hires me, that's all I will be. | |
|
| If u can pass MCSE Win2000. I don't think u are "P MCSE". New MCSE is not like old MCSE. The OS and the matter is much harder and the system is getting more and more advance(other word complex).
Also, most new MCSE candidate don't relie on the braindump anymore because it don't help.
Also, MS is trying to take out those paper MCSE. That's why they need to re-cert...

| Thanks for making me feel a little better about it. | |

I myself recieved all 7 MCSE 2000 books for 29.95 without any problem and only have to buy one book from them within this year to fulfill my obligation. Check it out.

| You must have Bookpool mixed up with Columbia House Music, I don't see anywhere you can get the set for 29.95 with an obligation to only buy one more | |
| fizz85 2001-07-12, 9:03 pm |
| How can ye doubt me? lol
Anyway here is the like it says but they are $9.99 now for all 7.
http://cbd.booksonline.com/
Yes I do have them I recieved them last month. Please read the whole contract it may be differant from when I joined you may have to buy more than one book at reg price.
Any questions I will be around.
|
| The problem for this book club is the need to buy 3 or 2 book after the first order!
However the shipping is too much! I believe if u buy the first set of book. The 3 book set cost $9.99 but the total is around $18 dollars
The shipping is too much...
Make sure you cancel the book club membership after the commitment.
| fizz85 2001-07-13, 8:07 pm |
| In my case I am able to cancel after I fulfill my obligation.
Just read the fine print!!!!
I got all 7 for 29.99 (including S&H) and my stub says I only have to
buy 1 more to fulfill commitment.
But maybe they messed up I am not going to tell
Gonna buy one more book and cancel it.
Read the full contract I cannot say that enough!
