As far as I understand the basic reasons for multiple domains are:
To limit traffic accross WAN links.
To decentralize domain-level administration.
To have more than one account policy.
To preserve the existing NT and/or DNS infrastructure.

What if a case study presents conflicting objectives, such as a need to do multiple account policies, but the company has a centralized IT structure?

You would have to accomplish the multiple account policies, by having more than one domain. This requirement would supercede the desire for centralized administration, at least in terms of the exam. You see a requirement of differing account policies, look for question(s) on this slant.
