Author 3rd party GUID?
me? I dunno...

If you have a third party application, say inventory management, is there an active directory object for each object in that application?

For instance, if I have a 3rd party app with a widget entered as stock, is that widget known to active directory by an AD GUID?

It would depend on the nature of the third party app. Mostly, when apps effect AD, it is to use the info that is already in AD, like users info, maybe adding attributes to the users info to integrate with some function of the application. Exchange does this, uses the user info in AD and adds some attributes to the users info to accomodate Exchange functionality. The actual email and such is kept in Exchanges Database, however. I would think it strange for widget info to be put into AD, but the users widget info might be another story.

Thanks Jeff.

I became aware of the problem of enterprise level invoice tracking resulting in a completely unmanageable hodgepodge of invoice numbers at the geographical locals.

You must have heard of it before, complete lack of sequential organization and subsequent unaccountability at the local level in exchange for enterprise level sequential organization.

I wonder if there is sofware that allows 'alias's' of guid's, that way the local invoice #11 would follow local invoice #10 at the same time both the local invoice would fall into place logically in relation to all other invoices generated withing the entire enterprise. That way, the two invoices above may be next to each other locally yet seperated by possibly thousands of transactions at the enterprise level.

Perhaps something as simple as appending a location code to the invoice number? That way the locals can have sequential numbering and the national can have sequential groups by location?

The program does not actually track invoices in AD though, right?

If the app is not directory enabled, it maintains no relationship to AD. If it is directory enabled, then it may read certain objects and/or modify the schema by doing such things as modifying object classes by adding attributes.
