The operation failed because:
Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain test.mycompany.com
"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. "

that's the error that I have got when I try to demote a child domain test.mycompany.com

what could be the problem, please?

1) Is this the last DC in the domain test.mycompany.com? If so make sure you select that option in DCPROMO.
2) DNS may be the culprit as well if the DC you are demoting cannot see it's records or the parent domain records.
3) If you botch the demotion and the DC demotes, but there are traces of the test.mycompany.com in AD you will get to do metadata cleanup with NTDSUTIL. Fun!

Hi Jeff, thanks, it's ok, the problem was I am using a domain admin account, and it needs Enterprise admin account to demote, just add the same account as a member to the Enterprise admin accounts and the task completed successfully, Fun!

I forgot to mention that it's a child domain for mycompany.com.

Thanks again.

You have to expect a lot of posts in the next days , as I am preparing for 217 exam and perform all of the labs in my home network.

Dang that's a good point I forgot to mention! Permissions or lack thereof can lead to a lot of quizical errors that don't neccessarily say what they mean.

This topic brings to my mind a problem i had in my work. Two DC's has the PDC master roles. I dont know why...it just happen one day (of course, is the same domain). And when i tried to demote one, it refuse and gives the same error Adam was having. Of course, i was using the Enterprise Admin. and the DNS records was ok. Also, the DC1 is able to see DC2, so it is not a networking problem either.

I also tried to seize the DC....it does not work. I've never seen this before. Neither Microsoft. The only answer till now is recreated a new domain. I got both DCs working now, but of coursem the Domain is splited.
